Bituminous mixtures - Test methods - Part 10: Compactability

This European Standard describes three test methods for characterizing the compactability of a bituminous mix, by the relation between its density or void content and the compaction energy applied to it, using an impact (Marshall) compactor, gyratory compactor, or a vibratory compactor.
This European Standard applies to bituminous mixtures, both those prepared in laboratory and those resulting sampled from plant produced mixtures. The results of the test method serve to supplement the results of mixture design.

Rezultati preskusne metode dopolnjujejo rezultate zasnove zmesi.

Overview

EN 12697-10:2017 - Bituminous mixtures: Test methods - Part 10: Compactability (CEN) describes standardized laboratory procedures to characterise the compactability of bituminous (asphalt) mixtures. The standard relates mixture density or void content to applied compaction energy using three compaction methods: impact (Marshall) compactor, gyratory compactor, and vibratory compactor. EN 12697-10:2017 applies to both laboratory-prepared and plant-produced mixtures and is intended to supplement mixture design and quality control.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Test principle: measure density (or voids) as a function of compaction energy and fit a mathematical model (regression) to derive compactability parameters.
  • Three compaction methods:
    • Impact (Marshall) compaction - two monitoring options:
      • Multiple specimens at different numbers of blows (typical blows: 5, 15, 25, 35, 50, 100 per side).
      • Single specimen monitored during compaction by decrement in thickness (100 blows per side) with automated thickness recording (accuracy ≥ 0.1 mm) and four final caliper measurements (±0.1 mm).
    • Gyratory compaction - density measured versus number of gyrations (minimum 200 gyrations); at least three specimens per mix; use mean density for calculations.
    • Vibratory compaction - prepare duplicate specimens at predefined vibration durations (typical total times per side: 10, 15, 20, 30, 60, 120 s; if no density increase after 60 s, limit to 60 s); record bulk density and calculate air voids.
  • Key parameters derived:
    • Compactability (K for gyratory, k for vibratory) - higher values indicate easier compaction (less energy to reach a target void content).
    • Compaction resistance (C for multi-specimen impact method; T for thickness-based impact method) - higher values indicate greater resistance to compaction.
  • Measurement and reporting: follow EN 12697-5, -6, -8 for maximum density, bulk density and voids calculations; specify test temperature, compaction energy units and regression method used. Typical measurement accuracies (thickness device and callipers) are 0.1 mm.

Applications and users

EN 12697-10:2017 is used by:

  • Pavement material laboratories performing mixture design validation.
  • Highway agencies and contractors for quality control of hot and warm mix asphalt.
  • Material suppliers and researchers assessing workability, compactability and constructability of new binders or gradations. Practical uses include assessing how much compaction energy is required on-site, comparing mix formulations, and informing rolling procedures for field compaction.
