3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions given in EN 13857-1:2025 apply.

4 Principle
During use, the insulation on the leading wires of electric detonators, electronic detonators and the plastic
tube of shock tubes can be subjected to abrasion, e.g. when drawn over rough surfaces. In case of leading
wires, this could cause short cuts, and in case of shock tubes, this could cause misfires.
For the verification of the resistance to abrasion, a test piece is subjected to abrasion by an abrasive
surface while it is kept under slight tension. For leading wires, the time is measured that it takes to abrade
the isolation of the test piece so that the electrical wire is exposed. For shock tubes, the abrasion is applied
for a specified time and the functioning of the test piece is verified after being immersed in water.
5 Apparatus
5.1 Abrasion test apparatus, as shown in Figure 1, compromising the following main components:
5.1.1 Rotor, made from steel or brass, with a perimeter of (453 ± 2) mm to which three abrasive strips
(5.1.2) are attached as shown in Figure 2 by means of glue or double-sided adhesive tape. It shall be
ensured that electrical contact between the abrasive strips and the rotor is made; this can be provided by
slits on the rotor where the ends of the abrasive strips are inserted (see Figure 2). The rotor shall rotate
at a speed of (9,96 ± 0,18) rpm, producing a mean peripheral speed of (0,075 ± 0,001) m/s.
Depending on attachment type of the abrasive strip to the rotor (glue or adhesive tape), it is possible that
the abrasive strip needs to be bent carefully in order to make it fit properly against the surface of the
rotor.
5.1.2 Abrasive strips, three pieces having a width of (10 ± 1) mm and a length of (145 ± 1) mm each,
made of grinding steel as specified in Annex A.
5.1.3 Weight A, to apply a load of either (4,00 ± 0,02) N or (12,20 ± 0,02) N to the test piece, as
applicable (see Clause 7), through the hinged arm (5.1.4) as shown in Figure 1.
5.1.4 Hinged arm, made of steel or brass with dimensions as shown in Figure 3. In the starting position,
the hinged arm shall apply a load of (8,35 ± 0,05) N to the test piece. It shall be possible to fix the hinged
arm in a position by means of a retaining pin.
5.1.5 Clamp, for attaching the test piece (see Figure 1, item 9).
5.1.6 Pulley, with a diameter (70 ± 1) mm, to which the test piece is clamped by means of a clamp
screw and that applies a tensile force of (8,1 ± 0,5) N to the test piece, by means of a rod and weight B as
shown in Figure 1.
As shown in Figure 1, the weight on the rod at the right of the pulley may hang down the right side of the
pulley.
5.1.7 Motor, capable of maintaining a constant speed of rotation of the rotor (5.1.1) independent of the
load applied to it during testing. The motor is not shown in Figure 1.
NOTE A DC motor with an output power of at least 500 W and with a separate speed control can be used.
The rotor (5.1.1) shall reach the speed of rotation specifi
