Overview
SIST EN IEC 60335-2-84:2022/A12:2024 is a European safety standard specifically addressing household and similar electrical toilet appliances. These appliances operate at a rated voltage not exceeding 250 V and typically involve the storage, drying, destruction of excrement, or washing and drying parts of the human body. Issued by the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CLC), this amendment (A12) updates safety requirements to enhance user protection and appliance reliability.
The standard forms part of the wider EN IEC 60335 series, which regulates the safety of household electrical appliances. Through this amendment, manufacturers and regulatory bodies ensure that electric toilet appliances comply with evolving safety expectations, protecting users, especially children and persons with reduced physical or mental capabilities.
Key Topics
Scope and Application
The standard applies to electrical toilet appliances including bidets, washlets, and similar devices that engage in hygiene and waste processing functions under 250 V rating.User Safety and Supervision
The amendment highlights the need for constant observation of very young children when using these appliances. It clarifies safe usage for children under 3 years and for individuals with limited physical or cognitive abilities, stressing supervision and user instructions.Protection Against Electric Shock
Enhanced requirements mandate the use of test probes 18 and 19 for electrical safety verification to prevent access to live parts, minimizing electric shock hazards.Mechanical Stability and Hazards
The standard specifies rigorous mechanical stability tests to avoid risks like tipping or injury from moving parts, incorporating updated testing methods using specified test probes.Marking and Instructions
Appliances must include clear and comprehensive markings and user instructions emphasizing safe use, supervision requirements, and maintenance guidelines, reflecting the updated definitions for user groups and safety precautions.Amendment and Compliance Dates
The amendment was approved by CENELEC in September 2023, with a mandatory national implementation deadline by September 2024 and withdrawal of conflicting standards by September 2026.
Applications
Manufacturers of Electric Toilet Appliances
Ensure compliance with the latest safety requirements, integrate updates in product design, testing, and user manuals to meet SIST EN IEC 60335-2-84:2022/A12:2024.Regulatory Bodies and Certification Authorities
Adopt and enforce these updated European safety standards, granting certifications only to products meeting the revised criteria for electrical and mechanical safety.Safety Inspectors and Testing Laboratories
Employ the updated test procedures involving test probes 18 and 19, and validate instructions for use and supervision requirements to verify product safety.End Users and Care Facilities
Benefit from enhanced safety assurances, especially in environments involving children and vulnerable individuals, ensuring proper use and supervision of electrical toilet appliances.
