This document applies to centrifugal pumps without priming devices for fire-fighting use designed as
 floating pumps (FPN-F),
 submersible pumps (FPN-S) or
 boosted pumps (FPN-B).
Fire-fighting centrifugal pumps without primer are defined as terminated by their inlet and outlet connections as
well as by their shaft ends.
This document applies for fire-fighting centrifugal pumps without priming devices for use under ambient
temperatures between -15 °C and 40 °C.
NOTE 1 For special conditions, -30 °C; see 6.11.
This document does not apply to fire-fighting centrifugal pumps without primer of which the only power source is
directly applied manual effort.
This document does not apply to fire-fighting centrifugal pumps without primer, intended to be used as
interchangeable equipment (i.e. combined by the user with another machine or vehicle acting as a driver).
This document does not apply to fire-fighting centrifugal pumps without primer with a nominal delivery
pressure pN above 15 bar.
NOTE 2 High pressure pumps with primer are dealt with in EN 1028-1 and EN 1028-2.
This document specifies the classification and general requirements for fire-fighting centrifugal pumps without
priming devices with a nominal delivery rate of up to 6 000 l/min.
This document deals with significant hazards listed in Clause 4, hazardous situations and events during the
commissioning, operation and maintenance of fire-fighting centrifugal pumps without priming devices, used as
intended and under the conditions foreseen by the manufacturer.
This document does not deal with the detailed verification of general and safety requirements and/or protective
measures. These are covered in EN 14710-2 "Verification of general and safety requirements".
This document does not deal with noise.

This document is a type C standard as stated in EN ISO 12100-1.
The machinery concerned and the extent to which hazards, hazardous situations and events are covered are
indicated in the scope of this document.
Where provisions of this type C standard are different from those which are stated in type A or B standards, the
provisions of this type C standard take precedence over the provisions of the other standards, for machines that
have been designed and built in accordance with the provisions of this type C standard.
While producing this document it was assumed that:
a) only trained persons operate the machine;

identified by risk assessment significant to this type of machinery and that require action to eliminate or reduce
risks.
The significant hazards are given in Table 1, which is based on EN 1050. Also shown are the subclause
references to the safety requirements and/or protective measures in this document. The arrangement of
significant hazards treated in the standard corresponds to Annex A of EN 1050:1996.

5 Safety requirements and/or protective measures
5.1 General
5.1.1 Fire-fighting centrifugal pumps without priming devices shall comply with the safety requirements
and/or protective measures of this clause. In addition, the pump shall be designed according to the principles
of EN ISO 12100-1 and EN ISO 12100-2 for hazards relevant but not significant, which are not dealt with by
this document.
5.1.2 Before using this document it is important to carry out a risk assessment of the machine to check that
it has the hazards identified in this clause.
5.1.3 For hazards which are to be reduced by the application of type B-standards referred to in this
document (EN 294, EN 349, EN 547-2, EN 547-3, EN 842, EN 894-1, EN 894-2, EN 894-3, EN 953,
EN 60204-1, EN 61310-1, EN 61310-2), the manufacturer shall carry out a risk assessment to establish the
requirements of these type B-standards which are to be applied. This specific risk assessment shall be part of
the general risk assessment of the machine.
5.2 Special requirements
5.2.1 Mechanical hazards
5.2.1.1 Crushing, shearing, cutting and entanglement
5.2.1.1.1 General
Means shall be incorporated to reduce the hazards created by exposed moving parts, including as appropriate:
 barriers conforming to EN 294 to prevent contact with moving parts;
 gaps at the end-of-travel conforming to EN 349;
 guards conforming to EN 953.
Rotating shafts, in particular those with exposed keys and keyways or other projections that could cut or catch
shall be protected or guarded.
Fixed guards for reducing risks from contact with parts of a pump, except for the pump inlet screen
(see 11.3.2.6), shall be removable only by using a tool. It shall not be necessary to remove the guard in order for
the pump to function normally.
Covers giving access for adjustment or setting of controls or sensors whilst the pump is in operation shall be
secured against unintended opening both when open and closed, and as far as possible remain attached to
the pump when open but shall not be required to be interlocked.
Machined or cut parts exposed, or likely to be exposed, at any stage during installation, operation, or servicing of
the pump shall be treated to remove burrs, rags and sharp edges by radiusing or chamfering.
5.2.1.1.2 Operating controls
Operating controls shall be clearly identified (see 11.4.1) and easy to operate as specified in EN 894 (all parts).
Manual controls and other operating devices shall be easy to reach and operable without unreasonable effort.
Operating controls shall be designed to ensure that crushing hazards are avoided, in accordance with EN 349,
as well as shearing or cutting hazards (e.g. by providing adequate clearance).

5.2.1.1.3 Drain openings
Drain openings shall conform to the safety distance requirements in EN 294.
5.2.1.2 High pressure fluid ejection
5.2.1.2.1 Sealing system
Pumps shall be equipped with a sealing system compatible with the pumped fluid.
Compatibility shall be assessed by considering the nature of the liquid, the pressure, and temperature.
5.2.1.2.2 Pressure containing elements
Pressure containing parts and components of a pump shall be suitable for the limit pressure p (see 5.2.1.2.3).
