Testing of welded joints of thermoplastics semi-finished products - Part 7: Tensile test with waisted test specimens
This document specifies the dimensions, the method of sampling, the preparation of the test specimens and the conditions for performing the tensile test with waisted test specimens in order to determine the tensile energy welding factor.
A tensile test with waisted specimens can be used in conjunction with other tests (e.g. bend, tensile, tensile creep, macro, etc.) to assess the performance of welded assemblies, made from thermoplastics materials.
The test is applicable to co-axial or co-planar heated tool butt welded assemblies made from thermoplastics materials filled or unfilled, but not reinforced. It is not applicable to tubular assemblies with a nominal outside diameter less than 90 mm.

Overview
SIST EN 12814-7:2024 is a European standard issued by CEN that specifies procedures for testing welded joints in thermoplastics semi-finished products using a tensile test with waisted test specimens. This standard outlines the dimensional requirements, sampling methods, specimen preparation, test conditions, and the measurement of the tensile energy welding factor. The method is valuable for assessing the mechanical performance and reliability of welded thermoplastic assemblies, particularly in industrial and manufacturing settings where material integrity is critical.
Key Topics
Purpose and Scope
- Defines methods for evaluating the weld quality of thermoplastics by performing tensile tests on waisted specimens.
- Applies to both filled and unfilled, but not reinforced, thermoplastic materials.
- Specifically used for co-axial or co-planar heated tool butt welded assemblies.
- Excludes application to tubular assemblies with a nominal outside diameter less than 90 mm.
Test Methodology
- Test specimens are carefully prepared and cut perpendicular to the welded joint.
- Tensile testing is performed by extending the specimen along its major axis at a controlled speed until fracture occurs.
- Load and extension data are recorded to calculate the energy to break and determine the tensile energy welding factor.
Sampling and Conditioning
- Both welded and unwelded specimens are sampled and conditioned at 23 ± 2 °C prior to testing.
- A minimum of five specimens for each condition is required for reliable evaluation.
Reporting and Documentation
- Detailed reporting includes specimen identification, weld description, test conditions, failure mode, and all measured values.
- Conformance to this standard ensures repeatability, traceability, and industry acceptance.
Applications
SIST EN 12814-7:2024 is applicable to a range of practical scenarios in the plastics processing industry, including:
Quality Control and Assurance
- Standardized testing ensures that welded thermoplastic joints meet required safety and performance standards.
- Supports documentation for manufacturing traceability and compliance with industry regulations.
Product Development and Validation
- Used by engineers and product developers to compare welding performance and optimize welding procedures.
- Helps in selecting suitable materials and welding parameters for specific applications.
Certification and Inspection
- Provides an internationally recognized method for certifying the mechanical integrity of welded joints in pipes, sheets, and fabricated assemblies.
- Used by inspection bodies and quality auditors to assess welded product compliance.
Research and Comparative Testing
- Facilitates benchmarking studies and material comparisons by providing a consistent methodology.
Related Standards
Adhering to SIST EN 12814-7:2024 is often complemented by reference to the following standards for comprehensive evaluation and documentation:
- EN 13100-1: Non-destructive testing of welded joints of thermoplastics semi-finished products - Visual examination.
- EN ISO 527-1: Plastics - Determination of tensile properties - General principles.
- ISO 5893: Rubber and plastics test equipment - Specifications for tensile, flexural, and compression types.
Practical Value
Implementing SIST EN 12814-7:2024 helps organizations:
- Achieve consistent and reliable quality assessment of welded thermoplastic joints.
- Enhance product safety, longevity, and customer satisfaction.
- Meet regulatory and industry-specific requirements in sectors such as piping, chemical processing, and infrastructure.
- Streamline documentation and reporting, easing the path to certification and market acceptance.
The standard is an essential tool for manufacturers, testing laboratories, and quality professionals engaged in the production and inspection of thermoplastic welded assemblies. By following its guidelines, companies ensure improved weld performance, compliance, and competitive advantage in materials engineering and manufacturing.
