Overview

EN 1176-6:2017+AC:2019 - published by CEN - is the European safety standard that sets additional specific safety requirements and test methods for rocking equipment and seesaws used as playground equipment for children. Intended for permanently installed equipment, this part of the EN 1176 series supplements the general provisions in EN 1176‑1 to reduce hazards during use and to define test methods and marking requirements. Informative Annex A gives guidance for other or non‑standard rocking forms.

Key topics and technical requirements

This standard focuses on practical, testable safety controls for rocking equipment. Main technical topics include:

  • Scope and types - Definitions and examples for Types 1–6: axial seesaw (Type 1), single‑point (Types 2A/2B), multi‑point (Types 3A/3B), rocking seesaw (Type 4), sweeping (Type 5) and overhead single‑axis (Type 6).
  • Free height of fall - Maximum permitted free fall heights per equipment type (e.g., Type 1: 1500 mm; Types 2–4: 1000 mm; Types 5 & 6: 2000 mm).
  • Seat/stand slope - Maximum seat/stand slopes (e.g., 20–30 mm limits depending on type) and ground clearance minima (commonly 230 mm unless damping or deflecting effects apply).
  • Pinch and crush protection - Gaps and joint limits tested per normative Annex C to prevent pinching and crushing.
  • Restraint of motion (damping) - Requirements for damping or motion control to avoid sudden stops or spinal shock loads.
  • Hand supports and foot rests - Secure attachment, projection limits and grip sizing recommendations (e.g., max diameter guidance for younger children). Test methods are given in normative Annex E.
  • Entrapment, side profile and anchor covering - Measures to prevent entrapment and blunt impact hazards; radius and projection rounding requirements; anchorage cover rules for exposed fixings.
  • Falling space and impact area - Defined falling space extents and required impact area critical fall heights for safe surfacing (to be used with EN 1176‑1 and EN 1177).

Normative annexes (B–E) set out the test procedures for slope, pinch/crush, stability, and projections. The standard also covers test reports and marking requirements.

Practical applications

EN 1176-6 is used to:

  • Design safe seesaws and rocking equipment that meet European safety limits.
  • Develop and perform type and on‑site testing (manufacturers, test labs).
  • Inform procurement specifications for municipalities, schools and playground operators.
  • Guide installation, inspection and maintenance when used together with EN 1176‑7.

Who should use this standard

  • Playground equipment manufacturers and designers
  • Independent test laboratories and certification bodies
  • Playground installers, municipal parks departments and specifiers
  • Safety inspectors and risk assessors
