Overview

EN 2591-6321:2002 is a CEN/AECMA aerospace test method that defines a damp heat, cyclic test for optical connection elements and fibre optic assemblies. The standard specifies how to check the ability of optical elements (including permanent connections) to withstand condensed moisture and cyclic temperature/humidity stresses. It is intended to be used together with EN 2591-100 (general test requirements).

Keywords: EN 2591-6321, damp heat cyclic test, optical elements, aerospace connectors, fibre optic testing, insertion loss, attenuation.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Verifies durability of optical connection elements and terminated fibre under damp heat cycling.
  • Specimen preparation: Fit specimens with normal accessories, terminate per product standard, stabilize at standard test conditions for 24 h (EN 2591-100).
  • Pre-test measurements (if applicable):
    • Insertion loss (EN 2591-601).
    • Mating and unmating forces (EN 2591-408).
  • Test cycle (typical sequence):
    • Phase 1: Raise chamber to ~65 °C (±3 °C) and increase relative humidity to ≈95%; accomplish within 2 h.
    • Phase 2: Hold the high temperature/high humidity condition for 6 h.
    • Phase 3: Over ~16 h, progressively reduce temperature to about 38–40 °C while keeping relative humidity as high as possible and not below 85%.
    • The three phases together form one cycle; repeat the specified number of cycles.
  • Monitoring: Continuously monitor attenuation during the test using EN 2591-602 method A.
  • Post-test checks: Immediately after the last cycle measure mating/unmating forces (EN 2591-408) and perform visual examination (EN 2591-6101). Results must not exceed specified limits.
  • Apparatus notes: Test chamber must prevent condensed water dripping onto specimens; control of temperature and relative humidity is required. Temporary joints, LLS and LDS as per EN 2591-601 and EN 2591-100 may be used.

Practical applications and users

  • Intended for aerospace manufacturers, connector and fibre-optic component suppliers, environmental test laboratories, and quality/certification engineers.
  • Typical uses:
    • Qualifying optical connectors, receptacles and cable terminations for aircraft and spacecraft environments.
    • Verifying long-term optical performance (insertion loss, attenuation stability) under damp heat cycling.
    • Supporting product design, acceptance testing, and compliance with aerospace environmental requirements.
  • Benefits: Ensures reliability of optical links in humid and thermally varying aerospace operating conditions, reducing field failures from moisture ingress and thermal cycling.

Use EN 2591-6321 for consistent, repeatable damp heat cyclic testing of aerospace optical connections to demonstrate environmental robustness and maintain optical performance.
