Overview

SIST EN IEC 62841-2-23:2026/A11:2026 is a European Standard developed by CENELEC (CLC) that sets out safety requirements for electric motor-operated hand-held tools, specifically focusing on hand-held die grinders and small rotary tools. As a vital part of the EN IEC 62841 series, this amendment introduces modifications and additions to further enhance operator safety, machine reliability, and conformity with EU machinery directives. Manufacturers, suppliers, and users of these tools across sectors such as metalworking, construction, and horticulture must ensure compliance to meet regulatory obligations and provide safe operating environments.

Key Topics

  • Scope: Applies to safety aspects related to the design, operation, and maintenance of hand-held die grinders and small rotary tools intended for professional and domestic use.
  • Modifications to Existing Clauses: Updates to supply connection, abnormal operation procedures, and specific clauses on noise and vibration emissions, ensuring comprehensive safety measures tailored to these tools.
  • Battery Safety Enhancements: Detailed provisions for battery-powered tools, requiring effective isolation and disabling devices. This ensures protection from accidental activation and mechanical hazards during maintenance.
  • EU Directive Alignment: Provides a framework for manufacturers to demonstrate compliance with the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, essential for legal market placement within the European Union.
  • Noise and Vibration Measurement: Defined methods for measuring emissions, supporting better workplace health and safety.

Applications

SIST EN IEC 62841-2-23:2026/A11:2026 applies to a variety of electric hand-held and small rotary tools, commonly used in:

  • Metalworking: Grinding, deburring, and fine finishing operations.
  • Construction: Precision rotary cutting or grinding tasks on-site.
  • Maintenance and Repair: Equipment servicing, including small rotary and grinding tools for detail work.
  • Gardening Equipment: Battery-operated rotary tools for light landscaping or trimming.
  • DIY and Hobbyist Use: Ensures tools available to non-professional users also adhere to the latest safety requirements.

Following this standard is crucial for:

  • Manufacturers and Distributors: Ensuring products meet European safety standards and can be CE-marked.
  • Safety Inspectors and Regulatory Authorities: Assessing technical documentation, product conformity, and workplace safety.
  • Purchasers and Employers: Selecting tools that comply with the latest safety benchmarks, reducing risk of accidents, and meeting legal obligations.
  • Training and Maintenance Personnel: Understanding safety devices, isolation features, and the correct procedures for servicing battery-powered tools.

Related Standards

For comprehensive safety and performance, SIST EN IEC 62841-2-23:2026/A11:2026 is to be used in conjunction with other parts of the EN IEC 62841 series:

  • EN IEC 62841-1:2015: General requirements for electric motor-operated hand-held, transportable, and lawn and garden machinery.
  • EN IEC 62841-2-X: Additional particular requirements for specific tool types (e.g., saws, drills, hammers).
  • EN ISO 12100: General principles for machinery risk assessment and risk reduction.
  • EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC: Essential health and safety requirements for machinery placed on the market.

Key benefits of compliance include improved product safety, reduced liability, simplified market access within Europe, and assurance of meeting the latest regulatory and industrial expectations.

By integrating these robust safety requirements and aligning with key European directives, SIST EN IEC 62841-2-23:2026/A11:2026 ensures that hand-held die grinders and small rotary tools can be used efficiently and safely across diverse sectors.
