Overview

EN ISO 1269:2006 - Plastics - Homopolymer and copolymer resins of vinyl chloride - Determination of volatile matter (including water) - defines two validated laboratory methods to measure the volatile matter (including water) content in vinyl chloride resins (PVC homopolymers and copolymers). The standard is published by ISO and adopted by CEN (EN ISO 1269:2006) and is used for quality control, material specification and compliance testing of thermoplastic vinyl chloride resins.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Two methods (Method A and Method B) for determining volatile matter, including water, in vinyl chloride resins.
  • Principle: Evaporate volatile components from a weighed test portion by heating to constant mass and calculate percentage loss.
  • Method A (oven and balance):
    • Oven temperature: 110 °C ± 2 °C (105 °C ± 2 °C recommended if thermal degradation is a concern).
    • Weighing dish: shallow, ~80 mm diameter (glass, aluminium or stainless steel) with lid.
    • Balance sensitivity: 0.001 g; weighings reported to nearest 0.005 g.
    • Procedure: preheat dish 1 h, spread ~5 g sample, heat ~1 h then in 30 min increments until successive weighings differ ≤ 0.005 g.
  • Method B (automatic thermobalance):
    • Oven temperature: 110 °C ± 2 °C.
    • Automatic thermobalance (IR or halogen oven integrated with precision balance).
    • Dish: ~100 mm diameter aluminium.
    • Sample mass: typically 5–15 g depending on resin.
    • End-point: mass loss rate < 0.02 mg over 2 min.
  • Expression of results:
    • Results calculated as percentage volatile matter to two decimal places.
    • Two determinations required; mean accepted if results differ by < 0.10 % absolute (special rule if both < 0.30 %).
  • Precision: Interlaboratory reproducibility reported as ±0.10 % (absolute).
  • Test report: Must reference the standard and include product ID, method used, temperatures, sample mass and durations, results and any circumstances affecting the result.

Applications and users

  • Quality control laboratories in PVC resin manufacturing and compounding.
  • Materials testing labs validating moisture/volatile content for specification compliance.
  • R&D teams assessing resin drying, storage or processing effects on volatile content.
  • Regulatory or procurement teams requiring documented volatile-matter data for product acceptance.

Keywords: EN ISO 1269:2006, ISO 1269, volatile matter, vinyl chloride resins, PVC testing, thermobalance, oven method, plastics testing.

Related standards

  • Prepared by ISO/TC 61 (Plastics). Laboratories often apply EN ISO 1269 alongside other plastics test methods for moisture, ash or residual monomer analysis when specifying comprehensive resin quality.

ISO 1269:2006(E)
Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International
Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this doc
