Overview
EN 10250-3:2022 - Open die steel forgings for general engineering purposes, Part 3: Alloy special steels - is a CEN standard that specifies the technical delivery requirements for open-die forgings, forged bars and products pre-forged or finished in ring rolling mills made from alloy special steels and supplied in the quenched and tempered condition. It replaces the 1999 edition and aligns many steel grades with EN ISO 683‑1 and EN ISO 683‑2. General delivery conditions are referenced to EN 10021.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and product types: Covers open die forgings, forged bars and ring-rolled products manufactured from alloy special steels for general engineering purposes.
- Chemical composition: Cast analysis limits and permissible deviations are defined (see Table 1 and Table 2). The standard lists many commonly used alloy special steels (e.g. 42CrMo4, 34CrNiMo6, 30CrNiMo8, 33NiCrMoV14–5).
- Heat treatment: Products are supplied quenched and tempered. Annex A (Table A.1) gives guidance on quenching and tempering temperature ranges for each steel grade (examples include quenching ranges around ~820–970 °C and tempering ranges from ~540–850 °C depending on grade).
- Mechanical properties: Minimum requirements for tensile strength, yield, elongation and Charpy V‑notch impact energy are specified by ruling section thickness in Table 3. Test-piece selection and testing follow EN 10250‑1:2022.
- Quality controls: Product analysis limits, restrictions on unintended alloying elements, and manufacturing measures to preserve hardenability and technological properties are included.
- Normative references: Cross-references to EN 10250‑1, EN ISO 683‑1, EN ISO 683‑2 and EN 10021 for broader technical delivery conditions and metallurgical data.
Applications and practical value
- Use EN 10250-3:2022 to specify and procure alloy steel forgings for heavy-duty engineering components requiring controlled mechanical properties and hardening behaviour.
- Typical applications include shafts, gears, axles, pinions, press components and other general engineering parts produced by forging and ring rolling where quenched-and-tempered strength and toughness are required.
- The standard helps ensure consistent material chemistry, heat treatment guidance, and mechanical performance across suppliers and users.
Who should use this standard
- Steel forgings manufacturers and ring-rolling mills
- Metallurgists and heat-treatment specialists
- Design and specification engineers in mechanical, automotive and heavy machinery industries
- Purchasing, quality assurance and testing laboratories
