SIST EN 60684-3-271:2011 is the Slovenian adoption of EN 60684-3-271:2011, which endorses IEC 60684-3-271:2011 without modification. It specifies requirements for heat-shrinkable elastomer sleeving that is flame retarded, fluid resistant, and made for a nominal shrink ratio of 2:1. The document is used when selecting or verifying electrical insulating sleeving for applications where wall thickness, temperature rating, colour, and resistance to heat, fluids, and ageing matter.

What does SIST EN 60684-3-271:2011 specify?

SIST EN 60684-3-271:2011 sets product requirements for four types of flexible insulating sleeving. The standard distinguishes standard-wall and thin-wall versions, with use temperatures up to 120 °C or up to 150 °C.

The document is organised into six clauses:

  • Scope
  • Normative references
  • Designation
  • Conditions of test
  • Requirements
  • Sleeving conformance

It also includes Annex ZA, which links the referenced international publications to their corresponding European publications.

AnnexWhat it covers

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 60684-3-271:2011?

SIST EN 60684-3-271:2011 defines four product types in Clause 1: Type A and Type B are for use up to 120 °C, and Type C and Type D are for use up to 150 °C. Types A and C are standard wall thickness, while Types B and D are thin wall thickness. In practice, this tells a buyer or engineer which sleeving to specify for the temperature and space available.

Clause 3 gives a structured designation that includes the IEC publication, part, sheet, type, size, colour code, and table reference. A suffix “X” is used when the properties in Table 6 are agreed between user and supplier. This matters because it makes ordering and traceability unambiguous.

Clause 4 requires conditioning before test: unless otherwise specified, the sleeving is shrunk in a forced-air oven before testing. That means test samples are brought to a recovered state before properties are measured.

Clause 5 requires compliance with the general requirements in IEC 60684-1 and with the property tables in this sheet. The main checks cover dimensions and mass, concentricity, heat shock, tensile strength, elongation at break, longitudinal change, low-temperature bending, dimensional stability, breakdown voltage, volume resistivity, flame propagation, copper corrosion, colour fastness to light, resistance to selected fluids, heat ageing, water absorption, and long-term ageing. In practice, this is the core evidence that the sleeving can insulate, recover, and survive service conditions.

Table 4 links minimum breakdown voltage to recovered wall thickness, and the voltage is measured using methods in IEC 60684-2. For non-standard wall thicknesses, the electric strength has to be at least that of the next smaller standard thickness. This helps users choose a wall thickness that can withstand the intended electrical stress.

Table 5 lists selected fluids and immersion temperatures, including fuels, hydraulic fluids, oils, cleaning fluids, and de-icing fluids. Other fluids and temperatures may be agreed between supplier and customer. This is the part to check when the sleeving will be exposed to specific chemicals.

Table 6 adds fungus resistance and shelf life. It also allows interim evidence during the long shelf-life check, which is useful for qualification and approval work.

Clause 6 notes that conformance is normally based on size 12.7/6.4 mm black sleeving, and colour fastness to light is qualified for all colours. That gives a practical reference point for product verification.

What terms does SIST EN 60684-3-271:2011 define?

  • Nominal shrink ratio 2:1 - the sleeving is designed to recover to about half of its expanded diameter.
  • Recovered wall thickness - the wall thickness after shrinking, used for dimensional and electrical performance checks.
  • Concentricity - how evenly the wall is centred around the sleeve, which affects uniform insulation.
  • Colour fastness to light - the resistance of the colour to visible change after light exposure.
  • Long-term ageing - an elevated-temperature exposure used to confirm retained elongation after ageing.
  • Fluid resistance - the ability of the sleeving to keep key properties after immersion in selected liquids.

Who uses SIST EN 60684-3-271:2011?

SIST EN 60684-3-271:2011 is used by electrical and electronic manufacturers, cable and wire harness assemblers, insulation engineers, quality managers, suppliers, and test laboratories. It supports product selection, incoming inspection, qualification testing, and supplier agreements for sleeving used in electrically insulating assemblies.

What changed in SIST EN 60684-3-271:2011 from the previous edition?

SIST EN 60684-3-271:2011 supersedes EN 60684-3-271:2004. The significant technical change stated for this edition is the addition of a sleeving type suitable for use at temperatures up to 150 °C.

Which standards are used with SIST EN 60684-3-271:2011?

  • IEC 60684-1:2003 - gives the definitions and general requirements for flexible insulating sleeving.
  • IEC 60684-2:1997 - provides the test methods referenced by the property tables.
  • IEC 60757:1983 - gives the colour designation codes used in the designation clause.
  • ISO 846:1997 - provides the fungus-resistance test method used in Table 6.
  • ISO 1817:2005 - provides the method for determining the effect of liquids, used for fluid resistance.

What does the SIST EN 60684-3-271:2011 document contain?

The document gives the product classification and designation format, then ties those to test conditioning and property requirements. Its tables cover dimensions and mass for the two wall-thickness families, minimum mechanical and electrical properties, breakdown voltage by wall thickness, resistance to selected fluids, and additional properties such as fungus resistance and shelf life.

It also points the reader to the relevant test clauses in IEC 60684-2 rather than repeating every method in full. For someone qualifying a material, the document functions as the acceptance basis for performance tests, product labelling, and user-supplier agreements.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
