Abstract

The present document defines classes of environmental conditions and their severities to which telecommunication equipment may be exposed. The severities specified are those which will have a low probability of being exceeded; generally less than 1 %. The present document applies to equipment being transported from one place to another after being made ready for dispatch from the manufacturer's works. The most commonly used methods of transportation have been taken into account, i.e. ground, water and air transport. Loading and unloading as well as temporary storage, have been included. Where the equipment is packaged the environmental conditions apply to the packaged equipment. NOTE: Normal transportation time is considered to be 30 days or less. Where the total transportation time exceeds 30 days then additional storage or packaging precautions must be considered.

SIST EN 300 019-1-2 V2.1.2:2006 is the Slovenian adoption of ETSI EN 300 019-1-2, published by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). It classifies environmental conditions and severities for telecommunications equipment during transportation, including loading, unloading and temporary storage. Engineers, quality teams and buyers use it to choose the right transport class and to judge packaging, handling and test conditions for dispatch.

What does SIST EN 300 019-1-2 V2.1.2:2006 specify?

SIST EN 300 019-1-2 V2.1.2:2006 is Part 1-2 of the EN 300 019 series on environmental conditions and environmental tests for telecommunications equipment. It sets out the transportation classes and the environmental conditions associated with them, so the reader can match equipment to the expected transport environment.

The document is organized into five clauses and two annexes:

  • Clause 1 - Scope
  • Clause 2 - References
  • Clause 3 - Definitions
  • Clause 4 - Environmental classes
  • Clause 5 - Environmental conditions
  • Annex A - climatic application summary for the transportation classes
  • Annex B - bibliography

Annex BBibliography

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 300 019-1-2 V2.1.2:2006?

Clause 4 defines three transportation classes. Class 2.1 is very careful transportation, Class 2.2 is careful transportation, and Class 2.3 is public transportation. In practice, the class chosen tells you how much handling care, climate control and route protection the equipment must withstand.

Environmental classes

  • Class 2.1 is for transportation with special care, especially for low temperature and handling. It covers protected transport cases, limited open-air climates, and transport where the equipment may be moved between cold and warm conditions.
  • Class 2.2 covers the conditions of Class 2.1 and extends them to all types of lorries and trailers on well-developed road systems, plus ship and train transport with shock-reducing buffers. It also includes manual loading and unloading of up to 20 kg.
  • Class 2.3 is the normal transport class. It covers the conditions of the other two classes and adds rougher transport, including areas without well-developed road systems and repeated exposure to sun, rain and splash water.

Environmental conditions

Clause 5.1 groups the climatic conditions that transport can impose: low and high temperature, temperature changes, humidity, air pressure, air movement, rain, solar radiation, heat radiation, water from other sources and wetness. In practice, this is the basis for deciding whether packaging and routing are suitable for the journey.

Clause 5.2 covers biological conditions such as mould, fungus, rodents and other harmful animals, excluding termites. That matters where equipment may pass through storage yards, vehicles or terminals with moisture or pest exposure.

Clause 5.3 covers chemically active substances such as salt mist, sulfur dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, nitrogen oxides, ozone, hydrogen chloride, hydrogen fluoride and ammonia. This helps users judge transport through marine, industrial or polluted areas.

Clause 5.4 covers mechanically active substances, specifically sand in air and dust sedimentation. This is relevant when transport routes include dry or dirty environments that can contaminate connectors, vents or enclosures.

Clause 5.5 covers sinusoidal vibration, random vibration, non-stationary vibration including shock, free fall, toppling, rolling and pitching, steady-state acceleration and static load. The clause also notes that random vibration is the more realistic transport parameter in many cases, and that free fall and shock are not applicable to Class 2.1. This section is the main reference for packaging design, palletizing and transport testing.

Annex A helps users connect the classes to open-air climate areas defined in IEC 60721-2-1. In practice, it supports class selection for a specific route, region or transport exposure.

What terms does SIST EN 300 019-1-2 V2.1.2:2006 define?

  • Absolute humidity - the mass of water vapour in one cubic metre of dry air in an air/water-vapour mixture.
  • Relative humidity - the ratio of water-vapour partial pressure in moist air to that in saturated air at the same temperature.
  • Weatherprotected location - a location protected from direct weather influences.
  • Totally weatherprotected location - a weatherprotected location where the equipment is enclosed and given some protection from the environment.
  • Non-weatherprotected location - a location where the equipment is not protected from the environment.
  • EE - Environmental Engineering, the ETSI technical area that produced the series.

Who uses SIST EN 300 019-1-2 V2.1.2:2006?

Manufacturers of telecommunications equipment use this standard to assign a transport class and to specify packaging and handling. Test laboratories use it to understand which transport conditions and severities are relevant for environmental qualification. Logistics providers, warehouse teams and quality managers use it to assess whether a transport route or handover process matches the chosen class.

What changed in SIST EN 300 019-1-2 V2.1.2:2006 from the previous edition?

The history records an earlier publication as ETS 300 019-1-2, followed by V2.1.0 and publication as V2.1.2. The Slovenian standard is identical to EN 300 019-1-2 Version 2.1.2.

Which standards are used with SIST EN 300 019-1-2 V2.1.2:2006?

  • IEC 60721-3-2 - provides the environmental class combinations used in Clause 4.
  • IEC 60721-2-1 - defines the open-air climate areas referred to in Annex A.
  • IEC 60068-2-27 - provides shock test guidance used for shock response spectrum definitions in the mechanical conditions.
  • ETSI EN 300 019-2-2 - the companion part for specification of environmental tests, including transport test severities and methods.

What does the SIST EN 300 019-1-2 V2.1.2:2006 document contain?

The document contains class descriptions, climate-condition tables, biological and chemical exposure tables, and a mechanical conditions table for transportation. It also includes notes that explain how to interpret temperature changes, humidity, wetness, shock and vibration for transport situations. Annex A gives a practical climate-area summary, which helps users choose the right class for a given route or environment. Annex B gives the bibliography for further background.
