Paints and varnishes - Determination of the pot life of multicomponent coating systems - Preparation and conditioning of samples and guidelines for testing (ISO 9514:2019)
This document specifies a method, carried out under standard conditions, for preparing and storing a sample of a multicomponent coating system and subsequently assessing its pot-life by measuring a particular property/ies.
Reactive systems curing within a short period of time, e.g. 3 h, will have the end of their pot life so near to the gel point that they will need to be tested for that particular property in accordance with ISO 2535.
The method can be carried out either as a pass/fail test by determining the particular property/ies after a specified period of time, or as determination of the pot life by repeating determinations at convenient intervals of time.
This document is not intended for in situ control of products during their application. It is intended to determine "pot life" in the laboratory.
The value obtained from this test method can be subject to modification by suppliers for practical reasons (e.g. starting temperature) when giving advice to users and should then be called the "practical pot life".

Overview
EN ISO 9514:2019 - Paints and varnishes: Determination of the pot life of multicomponent coating systems specifies a laboratory method for preparing, conditioning and storing samples of multicomponent coating systems and for assessing their pot life by measuring one or more specified properties. The procedure is intended for controlled, near-adiabatic laboratory conditions (not in situ application control) and can be run as a pass/fail test or as a time‑series determination to find the pot life. Suppliers may adapt the laboratory value for user guidance as a practical pot life.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and purpose: Test method to determine pot life under standard conditions, with guidance on which properties to measure (see Annex A).
- Applicability limits: Reactive systems that cure very quickly (for example ≈3 h) should be tested for gel time per ISO 2535.
- Sampling and preparation:
- Representative sampling per ISO 15528.
- Sample preparation per ISO 1513.
- Components conditioned separately according to ISO 3270; temperature difference between components ≤ 1 °C.
- Apparatus and sample size:
- Typical container ≈ 500 ml, height 1–1.5 × diameter.
- Use a thermometer (±0.2 °C) and timer.
- Blend volume placed in container: (300 ± 3) ml (mixed and sealed if applicable).
- Test procedure:
- Mix components as instructed for the product; report mixing proportions.
- Allow the blend to stand under near‑adiabatic conditions; withdraw samples at defined intervals or after a specified period.
- Perform determinations in duplicate; pot life is the longest time both duplicates meet the property requirements.
- Results and reporting:
- Report pass/fail or pot-life duration, product identification and all relevant test conditions. Include any supplier-adjusted “practical pot life” when provided.
Practical applications and users
- Intended users:
- Coatings manufacturers (R&D and QC), formulation chemists, laboratory technicians, compliance officers, and specifiers.
- Typical uses:
- Establishing laboratory pot life for multicomponent paints, varnishes and reactive coatings.
- Quality control checks, formulation comparisons, product datasheet validation, and advising end users on handling times.
- Benefits:
