Overview
EN ISO 22568-4:2021 specifies requirements and test methods for non‑metallic perforation resistant inserts used as components of PPE footwear. It defines how to assess mechanical perforation resistance and related performance attributes so manufacturers, test laboratories and procurement bodies can verify that inserts intended for use in safety, protective or occupational footwear perform reliably when exposed to mechanical and environmental stresses.
Key topics and requirements
- Perforation resistance: Two test methods are defined - Method PL (conical nail 4.5 mm diameter) and Method PS (conical nail 3.0 mm diameter). These methods evaluate an insert’s ability to resist penetration by a sharp object.
- Performance thresholds: The 2021 edition introduced updated type names (PL, PS), requirements addressing the “tent effect” (separation between layers during testing) and a minimum force requirement (950 N) for certain criteria.
- Durability and flexibility: Tests for flexing resistance assess the insert’s ability to withstand repeated bending in service without failure.
- Environmental and ageing stability: Procedures simulate high temperature, acid/alkali sweat, and fuel oil exposure to evaluate whether resistance is maintained under critical environmental conditions.
- Electrical resistance: Measurement methods determine whether inserts affect the electrical properties of footwear.
- Marking and documentation: Requirements for test reports and product marking ensure traceability and correct specification of insert type and performance.
- Normative structure: Annexes provide the detailed test set‑ups for Method PL and Method PS; normative references include ISO 20344 (footwear test methods) and ISO 105‑E04 (colour fastness to perspiration).

ISO 22568-4:2021(E)
Introduction
ISO 20345, ISO 20346 and ISO 20347 are related to safety, protective and occupational footwear which
define the performance and required properties of the footwear. On introducing these standards all
national standards relating to perforation resistant inserts were withdrawn leaving the manufacturers
of these items with no means of demonstrating the performance of their products. This document has
been prepared to allow manufacturers to demonstrate the type of the perforation resistant inserts
before being inserted into the footwear.
Non-metallic perforation resistant inserts and materials complying with the requirements of this
document are suitable components of “PPE footwear”.

4 Requirements for non-metallic perforation resistant inserts
4.1 General
Depending on the footwear construction, the non-metallic perforation resistant inserts could be in
contact with the wearer foot, therefore the requirements of ISO 20345, ISO 20346 and ISO 20347 should
be taken into account (for example abrasion resistance, water absorption, innocuousness).
Perforation resistant material can be tested in accordance with this document, even in an unshaped
status, if it is intended to be cut and/or shaped by the footwear or sole manufacturer. When shaped
non-metallic perforation resistant inserts are tested in accordance with this document, their suitability
to fit into footwear is not assured, because the dimensional conformity to the footwear depends on the
individual shape of each model of footwear.
