Overview

EN ISO 22568-2:2019/A1:2025 is an amendment to the international standard ISO 22568-2:2019 covering non-metallic toecaps used in safety footwear. Part of the ISO series on foot and leg protectors, this amendment updates normative references to ensure alignment with the amended Part 1 (ISO 22568-1:2019 + A1). The document is issued under ISO/TC 94/SC 3 (Secretariat: BSI) and circulated as a draft amendment in 2025 for comment and approval. It forms part of the standards framework for safety footwear components and may be adopted as EN ISO by national bodies.

Key topics

  • Scope update and normative references: The amendment replaces references to “ISO 22568-1:2019” with “ISO 22568-1:2019 +A1:202X” in Clause 2 and Clause 5.3.1.3 to reflect the updated Part 1.
  • Non-metallic toecaps: Continues to define requirements and test methods specifically for non-metallic toecaps used in protective footwear (material and component-level considerations).
  • Harmonization: Ensures consistency between Part 2 and the amended Part 1 across definitions, test conditions and referenced requirements.
  • Standards governance: Draft status highlights ISO/CEN parallel processing, invitation for comments, and potential inclusion in national regulations.

Applications

This amendment and the underlying standard are relevant to:

  • Safety footwear manufacturers designing and producing non-metallic toecaps and protective shoes.
  • Testing and certification laboratories implementing the standardized test methods for compliance assessment.
  • Procurement and compliance teams specifying safety footwear requirements for workplaces in regulated industries.
  • Material suppliers and component designers developing polymer, composite or thermoplastic toecap materials.
  • Regulatory bodies and standards committees adopting EN ISO 22568 series into national regulations or industry codes.

Practical value

  • Maintains up-to-date normative alignment between Part 1 and Part 2, reducing ambiguity in test methods and acceptance criteria for non-metallic toecaps.
  • Supports consistent certification routes for safety footwear standards, improving trust in protective performance and regulatory compliance.
  • Helps manufacturers and test houses avoid mismatches between component tests and overall footwear requirements.

Related standards

  • ISO 22568-1:2019 (and its Amendment A1) - general requirements and test methods for footwear components.
  • Other ISO/CEN footwear and personal protective equipment standards referenced within the ISO 22568 series.
