SIST EN 60745-2-19:2009 is the Slovenian adoption of EN 60745-2-19:2009 for hand-held motor-operated electric tools. It specifies particular safety requirements for jointers used to cut slots or grooves in wood or similar material, and it is intended to be used together with EN 60745-1 for the general requirements.

What does SIST EN 60745-2-19:2009 specify?

SIST EN 60745-2-19:2009 covers jointers for cutting into wood or similar material. The standard adds tool-specific safety requirements to the general framework of Part 1, so users apply it when they need the rules for this tool type rather than for hand-held electric tools in general.

The document keeps the Part 1 structure and adds or modifies requirements where jointers create particular hazards, especially guarding, dust, vibration and cutter-related risks. Its particular requirements are mainly in clauses 6, 8, 12, 19, 20 and 21, with added annexes for battery-tool cases and EU directive coverage.

AnnexWhat it covers
KBattery tools and battery packs
LBattery tools and battery packs provided with mains connection or non-isolated sources
ZANormative references to international publications and their European publications
ZZACoverage of essential requirements of Directive 98/37/EC
ZZBCoverage of essential requirements of Directive 2006/42/EC

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 60745-2-19:2009?

SIST EN 60745-2-19:2009 sets out the safety information, test conditions and construction features that matter most for jointers. In practice, these requirements tell manufacturers what to mark, what to state in the instructions, and how to verify that the tool behaves safely during use and abuse testing.

Marking and instructions

The standard requires marking for the direction of rotation of the output spindle, the rated no-load speed of the output spindle and the recommended disc cutter diameter. For a buyer or inspector, these markings are the first check that the tool can be matched with the right cutter and used at the right speed.

The instructions must include warnings about disc cutter speed, use of the guard, the correct disc cutter dimensions or type, not using blunt or damaged disc cutters, and checking the guard retracting system before use. The European text also adds instructions on correct use of the dust collection system and advice to wear a dust mask, which reflects the dust generated by jointers in operation.

Tests and operating conditions

Clause 12 changes the heating test so the tool is operated at rated input or rated current for 30 minutes, with temperature rise measured at the end of that period. This matters because the tool has to remain safe under sustained load, not only during a brief start-up check.

For vibration measurement, the standard specifies the transducer positions at both handles and requires testing under load using the conditions in Table Z101. The vibration total value a_h of the handle with the highest emission, together with the uncertainty K, has to be declared, so users know which grip position gives the highest vibration exposure.

Guarding, handles and cutter changing

A jointer must have a guard that automatically returns to the closed position when not in use, and there must be no provision to lock it open. The guard must stay in contact with the workpiece during retraction or return fully closed when released, which is meant to keep the cutter covered whenever possible.

The guard is checked by inspection and by cycling tests, including repeated opening and release and a later conditioning sequence that includes plunge cuts and humid exposure. The practical point is to prove that the guard still closes reliably after wear, dust and moisture exposure.

Jointers must have at least two handles, although the motor casing may count as a handle if it is suitably shaped. The standard also requires a means for replacing the disc cutter without difficulty, such as a spindle lock or flats on the outer flange.

Mechanical hazards and cutter requirements

The common modifications add a specific requirement that the disc cutter delivered with the tool shall comply with EN 847-1, with compliance checked by inspection. This links the jointer to woodworking cutter safety and helps ensure the supplied cutter is suitable for the machine.

The guard must also pass a mechanical strength test, including a one-time drop from 1 m onto concrete in the most adverse orientation. After the impact, the cutter must still remain inaccessible to a straight edge applied perpendicular to it, so the guarding function survives a realistic shock.

What terms does SIST EN 60745-2-19:2009 define?

SIST EN 60745-2-19:2009 defines the key tool parts and accessories used throughout the safety requirements. These definitions matter because they fix the meaning of the terms used in the marking, guarding and test clauses.

  • Jointer - a tool equipped with a disc cutter intended to cut a slot or groove.
  • Disc cutter - a rotating cutting accessory for wood or similar material, with feed direction perpendicular to its axis of rotation and a thickness much smaller than its diameter.
  • Output spindle - the spindle whose rotation is marked for direction and rated no-load speed, so users can match the cutter and the tool correctly.
  • Guard - the protective part around the disc cutter that has to retract and close automatically when the tool is not in use.
  • No-load speed - the spindle speed used for marking and tool identification when the cutter is not under cutting load.
  • Vibration total value a_h - the vibration value declared for the handle with the highest emission, used for exposure information and risk assessment.

Who uses SIST EN 60745-2-19:2009?

SIST EN 60745-2-19:2009 is used by manufacturers of jointers, test laboratories, certification bodies, and product safety engineers. They use it to design the tool, choose cutters and guards, run the required tests, and prepare the marking and instructions.

It is also relevant to quality managers, buyers and compliance staff who need to check whether a jointer is designed and documented to the safety rules for woodworking tools. For users in woodworking and tool distribution, it helps compare products on the basis of guarding, vibration information and cutter compatibility.

What changed in SIST EN 60745-2-19:2009 from the previous edition?

SIST EN 60745-2-19:2009 supersedes EN 60745-2-19:2005 + A11:2007. The foreword states that the new edition incorporates the amendment aligned with the updated Subclause 6.2 in EN 60745-1, and that the vibration values determined with the new 6.2 align with the Physical Agents Directive Vibration 2002/44/EC.

The foreword also states that Annex ZZ was extended to include Directive 2006/42/EC. In addition, the European text adds the common modifications for EN 847-1, the jointer-specific vibration test setup, the dust-related marking/instruction items, and the strengthened guard and cutter requirements.

Which standards are used with SIST EN 60745-2-19:2009?

SIST EN 60745-2-19:2009 is used together with EN 60745-1:2009, which supplies the general requirements for hand-held motor-operated electric tools. This Part 2-19 adds or modifies those general rules for jointers.

EN 847-1:1997 is the referenced woodworking safety standard for the disc cutter delivered with the tool. EN ISO 12100-1 and EN ISO 12100-2 are cited in the foreword as the overall safety framework used for the standard’s preparation.

What does the SIST EN 60745-2-19:2009 document contain?

SIST EN 60745-2-19:2009 contains the full Part 1 structure plus jointer-specific additions, modifications and replacements. It includes the definition of jointer and disc cutter, the marking and instruction requirements, the special heating clause, and the detailed mechanical hazard provisions for guards, handles and cutter changing.

The document also includes Figure 101 with examples of jointer designs, Figure Z101 for transducer positions, and Table Z101 for vibration test conditions. Those parts matter because they turn the safety requirements into testable setups for laboratory verification and conformity assessment.

The annexes add the battery-tool cases, the European reference list, and the linkage to EU machinery directives. In practice, that means the standard is not only about product design - it also supports testing, documentation, and regulatory alignment for jointers placed on the market.
