SIST EN 14488-4:2005+A1:2008
(Main)Testing sprayed concrete - Part 4: Bond strength of cores by direct tension
- Abstract
This European Standard describes a means of determining the tensile bond between sprayed concrete and substrate of concrete or rock tested in a laboratory as a direct tension test. Bond strength is defined as the capacity to transfer tension between two layers. Bond strength is calculated as the ultimate tensile force divided by the stressed cross-sectional area of a core, drilled out of a sprayed concrete layer together with a portion of the substrate concrete or rock.
Alternative in situ test methods for determining bond strength are allowed provided they meet all the requirements of this European Standard. In case of dispute, the method described in this European Standard is the reference test method.

SIST EN 14488-4:2005+A1:2008 is the Slovenian adoption of EN 14488-4:2005+A1:2008 from CEN. It specifies a direct tension test for measuring the bond strength between sprayed concrete and a substrate of concrete or rock, mainly for laboratory testing of sprayed concrete cores. In a dispute, the method in this standard is the reference test method.
What does SIST EN 14488-4:2005+A1:2008 specify?
SIST EN 14488-4:2005+A1:2008 specifies how to determine the tensile bond between sprayed concrete and a concrete or rock substrate using a direct tension test. The document also allows alternative in situ methods, but only if they meet all the requirements of this standard.
The standard is organized into:
- Scope
- Normative references
- Principle
- Apparatus
- Test procedures
- Results
- Report
- Precision
That structure matters in practice because it takes the user from specimen selection and test set-up through to result interpretation and reporting.
What are the key requirements of SIST EN 14488-4:2005+A1:2008?
The standard gives a complete test method for core-based bond testing, from drilling and preparation to loading and reporting. The main points are the specimen geometry, the loading conditions, and how to interpret the fracture.
Specimens and preparation
Clause 3 states that a core is drilled through the sprayed concrete layer and part of the substrate, with a diameter of 50 mm to 100 mm and a length greater than 2d, where d is the core diameter. In practice, this means the specimen must be large enough and long enough to isolate the bond zone for testing.
Clause 5.2 requires the finished specimen height to be 2d, the diameter to be at least four times the nominal maximum particle size, and not greater than four times the layer thickness. The bond surface must sit at least 0.5d from either end of the specimen. This keeps the test focused on the sprayed concrete-substrate interface instead of end effects.
Clause 5.2 also requires the end surfaces to be ground to the flatness requirements of EN 12390-1, and the steel dollies to be glued so their centres match the core centre within 1 mm. In practice, good surface preparation and alignment are essential to avoid bending and misleading failures.
Test machine and loading
Clause 4 requires a tensile testing machine of class 2 or better according to EN 10002-1, with stress measured within ± 2% and the stress increase controlled at (0,05 ± 0,01) MPa/s. This matters because the test result depends on a steady, axial load rather than a shock load or uneven pull.
Clause 5.3 says the test should not be performed until the sprayed concrete layer is at least 28 days old, unless otherwise specified. The specimen is then loaded continuously until fracture and the maximum tensile load is recorded.
Interpreting the result
Clause 3 classifies the fracture. If the fracture occurs in the bonding zone, the result is the actual bond strength; if not, the measured value is treated as a lower limit. Clause 6 adds that if more than 80% of the fracture passes through the bonding zone, the value is recorded as the bond strength. In practice, the failure mode is part of the result, not just the load value.
What terms does SIST EN 14488-4:2005+A1:2008 define?
Bond strength is the capacity to transfer tension between two layers, calculated from the ultimate tensile force and the stressed cross-sectional area of the core.
Sprayed concrete is the concrete layer being tested for adhesion to its supporting material.
Substrate is the concrete or rock base that the sprayed concrete is bonded to.
Core is the drilled specimen taken through the sprayed concrete and the substrate for the test.
Bonding zone is the interface region between the sprayed concrete and the substrate where fracture may occur.
Steel dolly is the metal piece glued to the specimen ends so the tensile machine can apply axial load.
Who uses SIST EN 14488-4:2005+A1:2008?
SIST EN 14488-4:2005+A1:2008 is used by test laboratories, concrete testing personnel, and project teams responsible for sprayed concrete quality control. It is also relevant when bond performance must be documented for acceptance, comparison of test results, or dispute resolution.
What changed in SIST EN 14488-4:2005+A1:2008 from the previous edition?
SIST EN 14488-4:2005+A1:2008 supersedes EN 14488-4:2005. It includes Amendment 1, approved by CEN on 2008-01-21, and the text marks amendment changes with tags in the document.
Which standards are used with SIST EN 14488-4:2005+A1:2008?
| Standard | What it contributes |
|---|---|
| EN 10002-1 | Requirements for the tensile testing machine, including class and test control. |
| EN 12390-1 | Requirements for specimen shape, dimensions, and flatness of cored specimen ends. |
| EN 12504-1 | The method for obtaining cored specimens from hardened concrete. |
The foreword also places this document in the EN 14488 series for testing sprayed concrete:
| Part | Subject |
|---|---|
| EN 14488-1 | Sampling fresh and hardened concrete |
| EN 14488-2 | Compressive strength of young sprayed concrete |
| EN 14488-3 | Flexural strengths of fibre reinforced beam specimens |
| EN 14488-4 | Bond strength of cores by direct tension |
| EN 14488-5 | Energy absorption capacity of fibre reinforced slab specimens |
| EN 14488-6 | Thickness of concrete on a substrate |
| EN 14488-7 | Fibre content of fibre reinforced concrete |
What does the SIST EN 14488-4:2005+A1:2008 document contain?
The document contains the test principle, apparatus requirements, specimen preparation steps, testing procedure, result interpretation, report content, and a precision clause. It also includes Figure 1, which shows the vertical cross-section of the specimen geometry and the loading direction.
Clause 7 gives the reporting items, including laboratory identity, specimen identification, deviations from the method, grinding adjustments, test date, age, maximum tensile load, cross-sectional area, tensile bond strength, estimated bonded area, failure mode, mean and individual results, and the technical responsibility declaration. That makes the document useful not only for running the test, but also for documenting it in a traceable way.
