Industrial automation systems and integration - Exchange of characteristic data - Part 6: Concept dictionary terminology reference model
ISO/TS 29002-6:2010 specifies a conceptual information model and an exchange file format for terminology information from a concept dictionary. The conceptual model is in Unified Modeling Language (UML). The physical file format is based on Extensible Markup Language (XML). The XML structures defined in ISO/TS 29002-6:2010 are intended to be returned by calls to the Terminology Service defined in ISO/TS 29002-20. The Terminology Service is an interface for retrieving terminological information about a concept from a concept dictionary. ISO/TS 29002-6:2010 was developed as a common resource to provide a level of interoperability between implementations of ISO 13584 and ISO 22745 for exchange of information from a concept dictionary. Its use is not restricted to these standards, however. It can be restricted through implementation profiles by standards that reference it. It can also be implemented without restriction.

Overview
ISO/TS 29002-6:2010 is a technical specification developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that focuses on industrial automation systems and integration. This standard specifies a conceptual information model and an exchange file format designed for terminology information sourced from a concept dictionary. Its primary purpose is to facilitate the exchange of characteristic data with improved interoperability across various automation systems.
The conceptual model is expressed using the Unified Modeling Language (UML), while the exchange format is defined using Extensible Markup Language (XML). This structured approach allows consistent and precise representation and exchange of terminological data essential to industrial automation.
Key Topics
Concept Dictionary Terminology Reference Model
Defines a standardized conceptual framework for organizing and managing terminology used in industrial automation, enhancing clarity and consistency.Unified Modeling Language (UML)
Provides a visual and formal representation of the concept dictionary information model, ensuring that stakeholders share a common understanding.XML-based Exchange File Format
Specifies XML structures enabling interoperability between implementations and facilitating data exchange through established terminology services.Terminology Service Interface
ISO/TS 29002-6 works in conjunction with ISO/TS 29002-20 to deliver a service interface that retrieves terminological information on specific concepts within a dictionary.Interoperability Support
Acts as a common resource to enable interoperability between ISO 13584 and ISO 22745 implementations, two major standards in industrial automation and data exchange.Implementation Flexibility
Can be employed without restriction or tailored through implementation profiles by other standards referencing this specification, allowing flexible integration.
Applications
ISO/TS 29002-6:2010 is highly relevant in environments where:
- Industrial Automation Systems require consistent terminology exchange for components, characteristics, and process data.
- System Integrators and Manufacturers need a common language to exchange product data and specifications, reducing errors and improving communication.
- Software Developers build interoperability frameworks or terminology services supporting complex data exchange standards in manufacturing and automation.
- Standardization Bodies reference this specification to harmonize terminology exchange protocols across different automation standards.
- Facility Management and Asset Lifecycle Management benefit from standardized characteristic data exchanges for maintenance, logistics, and operational efficiency.
By ensuring standardized terminology and data exchange methods, this specification facilitates seamless integration of automation components, enhancing productivity and reducing integration costs.
