ISO 8007-3:2003 Overview
ISO 8007-3:2003 is an international standard developed by ISO that specifies sampling plans and procedures for carbonaceous sidewall blocks used in the production of aluminium. These sidewall blocks are critical refractory materials, and the standard provides guidelines on how to properly sample consignments and extract test samples from individual units to ensure quality control. As part of the ISO 8007 suite focused on carbonaceous materials, Part 3 addresses the unique characteristics and sampling challenges presented by sidewall blocks, complementing Parts 1 and 2 which cover cathode blocks and prebaked anodes respectively.
Key Topics in ISO 8007-3
Sampling Procedures: The standard details methods for sampling entire consignments and extracting test samples from single sidewall blocks. Sampling must be done considering the block’s size, shape, and grain direction to maintain sample representativeness.
Sampling Directions: Samples should be taken parallel and perpendicular to the block’s major axis and predominant grain direction when known. If grain direction is unknown, orthogonal sampling along x, y, and z axes is mandated.
Sample Dimensions: The size of test samples must be sufficient for laboratory testing-generally at least three times the maximum particle size of the dry aggregate. Recommended test piece diameters are 30 mm or 50 mm with lengths at least 1.5 times the diameter.
Sampling Equipment: Use of diamond-coated or equally hard cutting tools (such as core drills or saws) is emphasized to avoid sample damage.
Sampling Report Requirements: The standard mandates a comprehensive sampling report detailing producer and customer information, batch references, sampling locations and directions, sample dimensions, the sampling plan, and personnel involved, providing traceability and quality assurance.
Practical Applications
ISO 8007-3:2003 plays a vital role in quality control processes within the aluminium production industry, particularly in the handling and testing of carbonaceous sidewall blocks. Its application benefits include:
Consignment Acceptance: Enables accurate and statistically sound sampling for acceptance testing of blocks received by smelters or users.
Material Characterization: Assists manufacturers and end users in determining the physical and chemical properties of sidewall blocks through well-defined sample extraction.
Process Optimization: Guides users in sampling strategies that help detect material inconsistencies early, improving downstream manufacturing performance and reducing scrap.
Supplier-User Agreements: Encourages collaboration between suppliers and users to agree on sampling points, enhancing transparency and consistency in quality verification.
Compliance and Certification: Facilitates adherence to international quality standards, which is critical for global trade and certification processes involving refractory materials for aluminium production.
Related Standards
ISO 8007-3 references and works in conjunction with several related international standards that provide the statistical and procedural foundation for sampling and testing:
ISO 5022: Shaped refractory products-sampling and acceptance testing guidance that underpins the procedures in ISO 8007-3.
ISO 2859-0 / ISO 2859-1: Define attribute sampling systems and acceptance quality limit (AQL) plans used for lot-by-lot inspection, pertinent in consignment evaluations.
ISO 3951: Provides sampling charts and procedures for inspection by variables, applicable for detailed quality assessment.
ISO 6206: Vocabulary related to sampling of chemical industrial products, ensuring consistent terminology in the application of ISO 8007 standards.
Adopting ISO 8007-3:2003 ensures robust sampling methodologies for carbonaceous sidewall blocks, critical for maintaining the performance and reliability of refractory materials in aluminium production. This leads to enhanced product quality assurance, operational efficiency, and international compliance, making it an essential standard for industry professionals involved in aluminium smelting and refractory material management.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 8007-3 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 47, Chemistry, Subcommittee SC 7, Aluminium
oxide, cryolite, aluminium fluoride, sodium fluoride, carbonaceous products for the aluminium industry.
ISO 8007 consists of the following parts, under the general title Carbonaceous materials used in the
production of aluminium — Sampling plans and sampling from individual units:
Part 1: Cathode blocks
Part 2: Prebaked anodes
Part 3: Sidewall blocks
Introduction
Details of the sampling of shaped refractory products in general are given in ISO 5022, which details the
statistical basis for sampling plans for acceptance testing of a consignment or lot.
Sidewall blocks used in the production of aluminium have specific requirements for sampling and, while the
statistical basis for sampling given in ISO 5022 can be applied, further or modified requirements apply.
ISO 3951 describes sampling plans for inspection by acceptance quality limit (AQL). ISO 2859-0 and
ISO 2859-1 describe sampling plans for inspection by attributes.
