Overview
ISO/IEC 10742:1994/Amd 1:1995 is a crucial amendment to the ISO/IEC 10742:1994 standard, focusing on management information elements related to the OSI Data Link Layer. This amendment introduces essential specifications addressing Data Circuit-terminating Equipment (DCE) conditions and introduces new attributes for LAPBDLE Managed Objects (MOs) and Initial Value Managed Objects (IVMOs). These additions stem from feedback on the Draft International Standard (DIS) 10742 and will be integrated into the base document upon its next revision. The standard is developed collaboratively by ISO and IEC under the JTC 1, SC 6 subcommittee, responsible for telecommunications and system information exchange.
Key Topics
DCE Conditions Addition: Specifications addressing operation modes for Data Circuit-terminating Equipment, critical for telecommunications equipment management.
New Attributes and Conditional Packages: Introduction of several new attributes and conditional packages to enhance the monitoring and management of LAPB Single Link Protocol (SLP) connections and Data Link Entities (DLE), including:
- Counters for received MLP resets, expired timers, frame reassignments, and guard region frames.
- Attributes like mW and mX for window sizes and guard region receive windows.
- Support for ITU-T DCE modes and mandatory parameters compliance.
Expanded Managed Object Classes: Enhancements to LAPB Data Link Entity Managed Object, LAPB Single Link Protocol Connection Managed Object, and their Initial Value Managed Objects.
Management Actions and Attributes for Intermediate Systems: Introduction of additional attributes and reset actions targeting the management completeness of repeater systems, like system reset time, repeater reset timestamp, and reset system action to initialize management counters.
ASN.1 Module Updates: Incorporation of new attribute syntax definitions to support the additional attributes and counters defined.
Applications
ISO/IEC 10742:1994/Amd 1:1995 provides practical guidance and specifications for managing OSI Data Link Layer implementations within telecommunications networks. The amendment is particularly valuable for:
Network Equipment Manufacturers: Designing and implementing Data Link Layer management functionalities that comply with international standards, ensuring interoperability and easier network management.
Telecommunication Service Providers: Enhancing network management capabilities to monitor link conditions, reset events, and timer operations for reliable service delivery.
Systems Integration and Management Tools: Developing management information models and tools that utilize standardized managed objects and attributes to control and observe Data Link Layer activities effectively.
Intermediate Systems Management: Managing repeaters and similar intermediate network elements with defined reset actions and counters to maintain system reliability.
By standardizing these management information elements, this amendment supports improved fault detection, performance monitoring, and configuration management across complex telecommunications systems.
Related Standards
ISO/IEC 10742:1994: The base standard defining elements of management information related to OSI Data Link Layer standards.
ISO/IEC 7776: Specifies general timer operations relevant to OSI communications, referenced in this amendment for Timer T4 support.
ITU-T Recommendations: Including specifications for DCE and LAPB operation modes, which this amendment incorporates and supports.
ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 6 Standards: A suite of standards related to telecommunications and information exchange that complement and extend the management framework established by ISO/IEC 10742.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) and IEC (the lnter-
national Electrotechnical Commission) form the specialized System for
worldwide standardization. National bodies that are members of ISO or
IEC participate in the development of International Standards through
technical committees established by the respective organization PO deal
with particular fields of technical activity. ISO and IEC technical
committees collaborate in fields of mutual interest. Other international
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO and
IEC, also take part in the work.
In the field of information technology, ISO and IEC have established a joint
technical committee, lSO/IEC JTC 1. Draft International Standards adopted
by the joint technical committee are circulated to national bodies for
voting. Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at
least 75 % of the national bodies casting a vote.
Amendment 1 to International Standard lSO/IEC 10742:1994 was prepared
by Joint Technical Committee ISO/IEC JTC 1, Information technology,
Subcommittee SC 6, Telecommunications and information exchange
between Systems.
