Overview
ISO 8005:2005 specifies a standardized method for determining the ash content in green and calcined coke used in aluminium production. This international standard is essential for ensuring the quality and consistency of carbonaceous materials, which directly impact the efficiency and performance of aluminium smelting processes. Accurate ash content measurement is critical as ash accumulates in the electrolyte, affecting both production quality and equipment longevity.
This document replaces the first edition (ISO 8005:1984) and provides a precise and repeatable method for the aluminium manufacturing industry worldwide.
Key Topics
- Scope: Defines the procedure for measuring ash content in green and calcined coke materials used in aluminium production.
- Sampling: Compliance with ISO 6375 ensures representative sampling of coke for analysis.
- Sample Preparation:
- Drying the sample at 105 ± 5 °C for thorough moisture removal.
- Crushing and grinding to pass through a 750 µm sieve for homogeneity.
- Apparatus Required:
- Jaw crusher or similar abrasion-resistant crusher.
- Pestle and mortar or mill made of hard non-contaminating materials like agate or silicon carbide.
- laboratory balance with precision to 0.0002 g.
- Platinum or porcelain dish for heating.
- Electric furnace controlled at 700 ± 10 °C.
- Desiccator to cool and store samples preventing moisture uptake.
- Test Procedure:
- Heating the sample incrementally to 700 °C to avoid mechanical loss and ensure complete combustion of carbonaceous matter.
- Maintaining temperature overnight or until constant mass is achieved.
- Calculation: Ash content calculated as a percentage mass of the residue after combustion.
- Precision and Repeatability:
- Repeatability (r) of 0.03% ash content.
- Reproducibility (R) of 0.06% ash content.
- Supported by interlaboratory study following ASTM Practice E691-99.
Applications
ISO 8005:2005 is primarily applied in the aluminium industry for:
- Quality control of anode materials: Monitoring ash content ensures consistent raw material quality, minimizing contamination in electrolytic cells.
- Process optimization: Maintaining stable ash levels helps optimize furnace efficiency and reduce energy consumption during smelting.
- Supplier and batch verification: Ensures raw materials meet prescribed ash content limits before use.
- Material certification: Provides certification data for green and calcined coke supplied to aluminium producers.
- Research and development: Assists in developing improved coke materials with optimized carbon and ash characteristics.
Related Standards
- ISO 6375 - Carbonaceous materials for aluminium production: Establishes sampling methods for coke materials, crucial for test sample representativeness.
- ASTM E691-99 - Conducting interlaboratory studies: Used as a reference for evaluating the precision and accuracy of the ash content test method.
- Other ISO standards on carbonaceous materials further related to coke characterization and quality assessments.
Summary
Adherence to ISO 8005:2005 helps manufacturers and laboratories accurately determine the ash content in green and calcined coke, ensuring consistent quality and reliable performance of carbon materials in aluminium production. The method emphasizes precision, repeatability, and practical procedural steps, making it a vital tool for industries aiming to enhance process control, reduce impurities, and certify materials according to international standards. By standardizing ash determination, ISO 8005 facilitates global trade and quality assurance in carbonaceous materials used in anode manufacturing.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 8005 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 226, Materials for the production of primary
aluminium.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 8005:1984), which has been technically revised.
Introduction
The content of ash or inorganic materials in coke is an important property, as ash will accumulate in the
electrolyte when the coke is used for anodes. Constant ash content may also be an indication that the same
raw materials are used.
