Overview

ISO/IEC 14496-27:2009/Amd 4:2012 is an international amendment to the ISO/IEC 14496-27:2009 standard, which focuses on 3D Graphics conformance within the broader domain of coding audio-visual objects. This amendment introduces conformance requirements for the efficient representation of 3D meshes with multiple attributes. Developed by the ISO/IEC Joint Technical Committee 1 (JTC 1), Subcommittee 29, it provides enhancements aimed at improving the coding and decoding processes related to complex 3D graphic data structures, such as meshes incorporating attributes like color, texture coordinates, and normal vectors.

Key Topics

  • Region-based 3D Mesh Representation
This amendment adds support for the IndexedRegionSet (IRS) node, an advanced extension of the classic IndexedFaceSet (IFS). The IRS allows grouping faces of a 3D mesh into subsets or regions. This grouping facilitates more natural and efficient encoding and decoding of 3D meshes that include multiple per-vertex attributes.

  • Conformance Points and Requirements
The document specifies clear conformance points that must be met by decoders and bitstreams handling IRS and Region nodes. Compliance includes adhering to syntax defined within ISO/IEC 14496-16:2011/Amd.1:2011 and ensuring rendering functionality through visual verification.

  • Bitstream Syntax and Decoder Compliance
The amendment mandates strict bitstream syntax compliance with no tolerance for deviations, emphasizing reliability and interoperability across implementations. In addition, compliant decoders must implement decoding processes equivalent to the referenced ISO/IEC 14496-16 amendment to correctly process IRS encoded data.

  • Test Suites and Validation
The amendment includes a suite of normative tests with electronic annexes containing test bitstreams and reference files. Examples such as 3D objects like barrels, chairs, and geodesic spheres with multiple texture regions are provided for decoder conformance verification.

Applications

  • 3D Graphics in Multimedia Systems
This standard is highly relevant for developers of multimedia platforms that incorporate 3D graphics, including gaming, augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and interactive media applications.

  • Efficient Streaming of 3D Content
By allowing efficient representation of meshes with multiple attributes, the amendment supports streaming technologies where bandwidth and storage constraints require optimized encoding techniques.

  • Visual Effects and Animation Production
Studios and software platforms benefit from conformance to this standard to ensure compatibility and fidelity when exchanging or rendering complex 3D mesh data across diverse tools.

  • CAD and Scientific Visualization
Efficiently encoding 3D meshes with attributes like normals and texture coordinates is critical for precise visualization in computer-aided design and scientific simulation contexts.

Related Standards

  • ISO/IEC 14496-27:2009
The original standard defining conformance for 3D graphics coding as part of the MPEG-4 suite for audio-visual object representation.

  • ISO/IEC 14496-16:2011/Amd.1:2011
This amendment to Part 16 defines BIFS (Binary Format for Scenes) syntax and decoding procedures used for 3D graphics, and establishes the foundation that Amendment 4 builds upon regarding IRS and Region nodes.

  • JPEG 2000 (ISO/IEC 15444)
Often referenced for texture compression in 3D mesh regions, ensuring interoperable and efficient image coding within 3D scenes.

ISO/IEC 14496-27:2009/Amd.4:2012(E)
Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) and IEC (the International Electrotechnical
Commission) form the specialized system for worldwide standardization. National bodies that are members of
ISO or IEC participate in the development of International Standards through technical committees
established by the respective organization to deal with particular fields of technical activity. ISO and IEC
technical committees collaborate in fields of mutual interest. Other international organizations, governmental
and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO and IEC, also take part in the work. In the field of information
technology, ISO and IEC have established a joint technical committee, ISO/IEC JTC 1.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of the joint technical committee is to prepare International Standards. Draft International
Standards adopted by the joint technical committee are circulated to national bodies for voting. Publication as
an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the national bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO and IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
Amendment 4 to ISO/IEC 14496-27:2009 was prepared by Joint Technical Committee ISO/IEC JTC 1,
Information Technology, Subcommittee SC 29, Coding of audio, picture, multimedia and hypermedia
information.
