Overview

ISO/FDIS 6941 outlines a standardized method for measuring the flame spread properties of vertically oriented textile fabrics. This updated international standard applies to single- or multi-component fabrics-including coated, quilted, multilayered, and sandwich combinations-subjected to a small, defined flame under controlled laboratory conditions. The standard is critical for assessing the burning behavior and safety performance of various textile products used in industrial and consumer applications.

The methodology focuses on flame spread time-the duration for a flame front to travel a specified distance on the fabric-and enables consistent evaluation of fabric inflammability. ISO 6941 provides detailed procedures, apparatus specifications, and testing conditions to ensure accuracy, reproducibility, and safety during testing. This latest edition clarifies previous content without structural changes and integrates corrections for precision in test setup and reporting.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Application: Measurement involves vertically oriented textile specimens exposed to a controlled flame for 10 seconds, with recording of flame spread times at predefined marker locations on the fabric.
  • Test Apparatus: Includes a specialized mounting frame, gas burner, test specimen holder with support pins, timing devices with 0.2-second accuracy, and marker threads placed at defined distances to detect flame progress.
  • Test Procedures: Two ignition procedures are detailed-surface ignition and bottom edge ignition-reflecting different real-world exposure scenarios for the fabrics.
  • Specimen Preparation & Conditioning: Standard specimen dimensions are 560 mm × 170 mm, conditioned in a controlled atmosphere of 20 °C ± 2 °C and relative humidity of 65% ± 5% for a minimum of 24 hours before testing.
  • Health and Safety: Emphasis on adequate ventilation and operator safety due to potential hazardous fumes from burning textiles. Testing environment must ensure sufficient oxygen supply for valid flame behavior assessment.
  • Precision & Reporting: Includes guidance on repeating tests with multiple specimens, measurement accuracy, and requirements for detailed test reports.

Applications

  • Textile Manufacturing Quality Control: ISO 6941 enables manufacturers to evaluate flame spread characteristics of fabrics, ensuring regulatory compliance and improving fire safety of end products.
  • Safety Certification: Provides a reliable and recognized test method for certifying textiles used in upholstery, garments, industrial protective clothing, and interior decoration materials.
  • Product Development: Assists textile engineers in designing flame-retardant fabrics by evaluating performance against standardized flame exposure.
  • Risk Assessment: Used by safety regulators and testing laboratories to assess the fire hazard potential of textile products in a consistent, repeatable manner.
  • Research and Standardization: Facilitates comparison of flame resistance across fabric types and supports development of enhanced flammability standards in the textile industry.

Related Standards

  • ISO 4880: Vocabulary related to burning behaviour of textiles, providing key definitions used in ISO 6941.
  • EN ISO 6940: Determination of ease of ignition of vertically oriented textile specimens, a complementary method assessing ignition propensity.
  • ISO 6940:2004: Previous edition related to ignition testing, referenced for comparative methods.
  • ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1 & 2: Establish editorial rules and development procedures for ISO standards, ensuring harmonized documentation.

This standard is essential for professionals involved in textile testing, fire safety engineering, product certification, and regulatory compliance. Implementing ISO/FDIS 6941 ensures consistent, accurate assessment of flame spread behavior, supporting safer textile product innovation and usage worldwide.

Introduction
This method is one of two closely related methods of test for the inflammability of textile fabrics. This
[1]
method determines the “flame spread time” as defined in ISO 4880 . The other method observes and
[2]
measures “ease of ignition” (see ISO ISO 6940 ).
The method given in this document assesses the properties of textile fabrics in response to flame contact
under controlled conditions. There is a possibility that results do not apply the situations where there is
restricted air supply or exposure to large sources of intense heat.
The influence of seams on the behaviour of textile fabrics can be determined by this method, the seam being
positioned within the test specimen so as to be subjected to the test flame. Whenever practicable, trimmings
are tested as part of the textile fabric assembly on which they are or will be used.

Avant-propos
(voir www.iso.org/directives).
l’adresse www.iso.org/brevets.
suivant: www.iso.org/iso/fr/avant-propos.html.

du jet de gaz;
— Les Figures 3 a) et b) ont été révisées pour montrer précisément l’éprouvette;

ISO/FDIS 6941:2026(fr)
Introduction

des étoffes et produits industriels orientés verticalement par rapport à une flamme définie de petite taille;

— ISO Online browsing platform: disponible à l’adresse https:// www .iso .org/ obp
— IEC Electropedia: disponible à l’adresse https:// www .electropedia .org/
3.1
