Overview
ISO 8940:2002 is an international standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that specifies the dimensions for aerospace anchor nuts. These nuts are characterized by their self-locking, sealing, floating, two-lug design with counterbore and MJ threads. The standard defines classifications based on strength and temperature resistance: 900 MPa at ambient temperature with maximum service temperatures of 120 °C, 175 °C, and 235 °C.
This standard provides precise dimensional requirements crucial for ensuring the reliable performance and interchangeability of anchor nuts used in aerospace applications. It supports consistent manufacturing and quality control for fasteners essential to aircraft and space vehicle assembly.
Key Topics
- Nut Type: Anchor, self-locking, sealing, floating, two-lug, with counterbore.
- Thread Type: MJ threads as per ISO 5855-2 specifications.
- Classification: Strength and temperature ratings of 900 MPa at ambient temperature with max operating temperatures of 120 °C, 175 °C, and 235 °C.
- Dimension Specifications: Detailed dimensions and tolerances given in millimeters, applicable after surface coatings but before lubrication.
- Compliance: Designed to satisfy procurement specifications such as ISO 5858 for aerospace fasteners.
- Tolerances: Conformance with ISO 8788 for tolerances of form and position, ensuring precision in fit and function.
- Material & Performance: Nuts must withstand specified tensile stresses without breaking or cracking, retaining original characteristics after exposure to defined temperature limits.
- Manufacturer’s Discretion: Some form details such as seal retainer and anti-rotational devices may vary, provided dimensional requirements are met.
Applications
ISO 8940:2002 nuts are widely used in critical aerospace fastener systems requiring robust mechanical and thermal performance including:
- Aircraft structural assemblies where vibration resistance and sealing are critical.
- Space vehicle component fastenings requiring floating nuts to accommodate misalignment.
- High-temperature zones in aerospace environments such as engine assemblies or heat-exposed airframe parts, benefiting from the distinct temperature classifications.
- Maintenance and repair operations where standardized replacement parts are essential for safety and compliance.
- Aerospace manufacturing ensuring compatibility between fasteners and mating components through consistent dimensional standards.
Using nuts conforming to ISO 8940 guarantees reliable locking, resistance to loosening under vibration, effective sealing against environmental ingress, and the capacity to perform under high mechanical stress and elevated temperatures typical in aerospace settings.
Related Standards
- ISO 5855-2:1999: Aerospace MJ threads - Defines limit dimensions for bolts and nuts with MJ thread forms, referenced within ISO 8940 for thread specifications.
- ISO 8788:2000: Aerospace nuts – Specifies tolerances of form and position which ISO 8940 employs to control precision.
- ISO 5858:1999: Aerospace nuts with self-locking and maximum operating temperature requirements align with ISO 8940's procurement specification context.
- ISO 13715:2000: Technical drawings standard related to edges of undefined shape, relevant for manufacturing and inspection documentation.
ISO 8940:2002 is essential for aerospace engineers, manufacturers, and quality assurance professionals aiming to standardize and optimize the use of specialized anchor nuts in aircraft and space vehicle construction. Adherence to this standard helps maintain structural integrity, safety, and performance in high-demand aerospace environments.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO
member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical
committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in
liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 3.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards adopted
by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this International Standard may be the subject of
patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 8940 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 20, Aircraft and space vehicles, Subcommittee SC 4,
Aerospace fastener systems.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 8940:1988), which has been technically revised.
Introduction
The dimensions specified in this International Standard have been determined to allow production of a part which
will satisfy the requirements of the procurement specification ISO 5858.

Avant-propos
technique.
Introduction
Les dimensions spécifiées dans la présente Norme internationale ont été définies pour permettre la production
d’une pièce satisfaisant aux exigences de la spécification d’approvisionnement ISO 5858.
