Identification cards - Integrated circuit cards - Part 2: Cards with contacts - Dimensions and location of the contacts

ISO/IEC 7816-2:2007 specifies the dimensions and locations for each of the contacts on an integrated circuit card of an ID-1 card type. It also provides information on the way to identify which standards define the use of the contacts. ISO/IEC 7816-2:2007 is to be used in conjunction with ISO/IEC 7816-1.

Overview

ISO/IEC 7816-2:2007 is part of the ISO/IEC 7816 series for integrated circuit (IC) cards. It specifies the dimensions and locations of the electrical contacts on ID-1 type cards (contact smart cards) and explains how to identify which parts of ISO/IEC 7816 assign functions to those contacts. This document is intended to be used together with ISO/IEC 7816-1 (physical characteristics) and related parts that define electrical interface and protocols.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Contact set: Defines eight contacts, designated C1–C8, for cards with contacts (contact smart cards).
  • Minimum contact area: Each contact must meet a specified minimum rectangular surface area (see standard figures); maximum size and precise shape are not constrained by this part, but contacts must be electrically isolated from each other.
  • Contact placement: Locations are referenced to the card edges per ISO/IEC 7810; contacts are required on the front side of the card.
  • Relative layout rules: Specifies the position of contacts relative to other card technologies - embossing (if present) on the same side as contacts and magnetic stripe on the opposite side.
  • Annex A (informative): Maps which ISO/IEC 7816 parts (e.g., -3, -10, -12) assign usage to each contact.
  • Annex B (informative): Identifies possible conductive zones from legacy designs (transitional positions pre-1990) and recommends electrical isolation of zones Z1…Z8 to prevent shorts in interface devices.
  • Testing reference: Conformance tests are covered by ISO/IEC 10373-3 (test methods for IC cards with contacts).
  • Intellectual property note: The introduction highlights claimed patents related to assigning contacts to a differential pair (e.g., USB D+/D−). The patent holder has stated willingness to license under reasonable terms.

Practical applications

  • Ensures cross-vendor compatibility between contact smart cards and card readers by standardizing where and how contacts appear on an ID-1 card.
  • Used by card manufacturers to place and isolate conductive zones during card production.
  • Used by card reader / interface device designers for reliable contact alignment and to avoid short circuits.
  • Relevant to system integrators, payment schemes, identity systems, access control and any organization implementing contact-based smart card solutions.

Who uses this standard

  • Smart card and ID card manufacturers
  • Card reader hardware designers and test laboratories
  • Payment networks, government ID programs, security integrators
  • Standards practitioners ensuring compliance across ISO/IEC 7816 parts

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) and IEC (the International Electrotechnical
Commission) form the specialized system for worldwide standardization. National bodies that are members of
ISO or IEC participate in the development of International Standards through technical committees
established by the respective organization to deal with particular fields of technical activity. ISO and IEC
technical committees collaborate in fields of mutual interest. Other international organizations, governmental
and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO and IEC, also take part in the work. In the field of information
technology, ISO and IEC have established a joint technical committee, ISO/IEC JTC 1.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of the joint technical committee is to prepare International Standards. Draft International
Standards adopted by the joint technical committee are circulated to national bodies for voting. Publication as
an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the national bodies casting a vote.
ISO/IEC 7816-2 was prepared by Joint Technical Committee ISO/IEC JTC 1, Information technology,
Subcommittee SC 17, Cards and personal identification.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO/IEC 7816-2:1999), which has been technically
revised. It also incorporates material extracted from ISO/IEC 7816-2:1999/Amd.1:2004.
ISO/IEC 7816 consists of the following parts, under the general title Identification cards — Integrated circuit
cards:
⎯ Part 1: Cards with contacts — Physical characteristics

Introduction
This part of ISO/IEC 7816 is one of a series of standards defining the parameters for integrated circuit cards
with contacts and the use of such cards for international interchange.
These cards are identification cards intended for information exchange negotiated between the outside and
the integrated circuit in the card. As a result of an information exchange, the card delivers information
(computation results, stored data) and/or modifies its content (data storage, event memorization).
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC)
draw attention to the fact that it is claimed that compliance with this document may involve the use of the
