Overview
ISO 8567:2002 is an international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that defines the maximum permissible area for subtitles on 35 mm and 16 mm motion-picture release prints. This standard specifies the position and dimensions of subtitle areas during normal projection, as governed by related standards ISO 359 and ISO 2907. It aims to ensure consistency and compatibility in subtitle placement for cinematic presentations, enhancing viewer experience and preserving the visual integrity of films.
This second edition of ISO 8567 revises the original 1986 edition with updated technical specifications. It is important to note that ISO 8567:2002 is distinct from ISO 1223, which addresses safe picture areas for motion-picture films intended for television transmission rather than cinema.
Key Topics
- Scope of Subtitle Area: ISO 8567 specifies the maximum allowable size for subtitle areas on 35 mm and 16 mm prints, crucial for avoiding obstruction of critical image details during projection.
- Positioning Guidelines: The subtitle area must be centred with the intended image area on the release print, ensuring subtitles are visually aligned and consistently placed.
- Dimensions Defined: The standard provides detailed dimensional values expressed in millimeters and inches according to the film format and aspect ratio, including:
- 35 mm non-anamorphic (aspect ratios from 1.37:1 to 1.66:1)
- 35 mm anamorphic (aspect ratios up to 2.35:1)
- 16 mm (aspect ratio 1.33:1)
- Safe Area Compliance: Ensures subtitles do not interfere with the projectable image area as defined in ISO 359 (16 mm) and ISO 2907 (35 mm).
- Projection Compatibility: Supports normal cinematic projection standards, with cautionary notes regarding variations in aspect ratio projections across countries.
Applications
ISO 8567:2002 is essential for professionals involved in the production, distribution, and exhibition of motion pictures, specifically when incorporating subtitles in releases printed on 35 mm and 16 mm film formats. Its practical applications include:
- Film Producers and Editors: To design subtitle placement that complies with international standards, thereby enhancing subtitle readability without impacting the visual content.
- Post-Production Houses: To ensure subtitling aligns properly with the maximum permitted area, maintaining compatibility across different projection systems.
- Cinema Exhibitors and Distribution: To verify that subtitles appear within legally and technically accepted boundaries, preserving the film’s intended presentation.
- Standards Bodies and Regulators: To harmonize international cinematic practices and support the production of standardized film prints.
- Subtitle Transcribers and Translators: Enables understanding the spatial constraints for subtitle content, promoting clarity and viewer accessibility.
Related Standards
ISO 8567:2002 references and complements several key cinematography standards:
- ISO 359:1983 – Defines projectable image areas on 16 mm motion-picture prints.
- ISO 2907 – Specifies maximum projectable image area on 35 mm motion-picture film prints.
- ISO 1223 – Covers picture areas and safe zones for motion-picture films intended for television broadcasts, differing from cinema-focused ISO 8567.
Together, these standards establish a comprehensive framework for motion-picture imaging and subtitle presentation across different media and formats.
Adhering to ISO 8567:2002 ensures subtitles on 35 mm and 16 mm prints are accurately positioned and sized for optimal display, facilitating international distribution and consistent viewing experiences in cinemas worldwide. This standard supports best practices in cinematography, film production, and subtitle integration.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO
member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical
committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in
liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 3.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards adopted
by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this International Standard may be the subject of
patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 8567 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 36, Cinematography.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 8567:1986), which has been technically revised.
