BRIEF HISTORY
The IS0 Recommenddtion R 164, Composition of Aluminium Alloy Castings, was
drawn up by Technical Combittee ISO/TC 79, Light Metals and Their Alloys, the Secretariat
of which is held by Association Française de Normalisation (AFNOR).
The Secretariat of the Technical Committee, in August 1954, drew up and circulated
a first draft proposal dealin$ with compositions of aluminium alloy castings,
This draft proposal was briefly examined during the first meeting of the Technical
Committee, held in Paris, i@ January 1955. A first list was drawn up containing the types
of compositions to be studifd with a view to their standardization.
The Secretariat thereafqer circulated two further draft proposals in succession.
At the second meeting, of the Technical Committee, held in Paris, in October 1956,
the latter of these two draft proposals was thoroughly examined; after having been sub-
jected to a fairly large number of modifications, it constituted the basis for an agreement
reached among the delegatik present.
The final text of this $aft proposal was then submitted, by correspondence, to the
members of the Technical Çommittee for their approval, and was adopted by a majority
of them as a Draft IS0 Repommendation.
On 21 November 1954, the Draft IS0 Recommendation (No. 258) was distributed
to all the IS0 Member Botlies and was approved, subject to some amendments, by the
following Member Bodies :
India Romania
Australia
Austria Israel Spain
Italy Sweden
Belgium
Netherlands Switzerland
Canada
Union of South Africa
France New Zealand
Norway United Kingdom
Germany
Poland U.S.S.R.
Hungary
Two Member Bodies qpposed the approval of the Draft: Brazil, Denmark.
The Draft IS0 Recopmendation was then submitted by correspondence to the
IS0 Council, which decidedb in July 1960, to accept it as an IS0 RECOMMENDATION.

HISTORIQUE
d’assez nombreuses modificc(tions,
