Overview

ISO 603-18:2013 is an international standard that defines the dimensions, shapes, and limit deviations of bonded abrasive grinding wheels specifically designed for flat glass edge grinding machines. This standard ensures uniformity and interchangeability of grinding wheels used on stationary machines where either the grinding wheel or the workpiece is fixed or guided mechanically. The maximum operating speed for these bonded abrasive products is set at 50 m/s or less, promoting safe and effective usage in industrial settings.

Developed by ISO Technical Committee ISO/TC 29, Subcommittee SC 5, this standard complements the broader ISO 603 series, which covers grinding wheel dimensions for a variety of grinding applications.

Key Topics

  • Grinding Wheel Types and Shapes

    • Straight wheels (Type 1)
    • Straight cup wheels (Type 6)
    • Cemented disc wheels (Type 35)
    • Specially profiled straight wheels (Type 1 with profile)
  • Dimensions and Specifications

    • Precise measurements including diameter (D), thickness (T), bore (H), width (W), and edge thickness (E)
    • Detailed tables provide specific dimension ranges tailored to each wheel type
  • Designation Format

    • Standardized naming convention that includes type, dimensions, abrasive nature, grit size, hardness grade, structure, bond type, and maximum speed
  • Tolerances and Quality

    • Limit deviations and run-out tolerances aligned with ISO 13942
    • Unbalance criteria according to ISO 6103
    • Marking requirements in line with ISO 525

Applications

ISO 603-18:2013 serves as a critical specification for manufacturers, suppliers, and users of grinding wheels tailored for flat glass edge grinding machines. Typical applications include:

  • Glass manufacturing and processing industries requiring precise edge finishing of flat glass products
  • Stationary grinding operations where safety and dimensional accuracy are essential
  • Mechanical and manual guiding of glass workpieces during edge grinding
  • Ensuring quality control and consistency across different production batches of grinding wheels
  • Facilitating compatibility and interchangeability between different suppliers and machines

By adhering to this standard, companies can ensure high-performance abrasive products that meet safety, efficiency, and quality benchmarks in glass edge grinding tasks.

Related Standards

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International
Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting.
Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies
casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of
patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 603-18 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 29, Small tools, Subcommittee SC 5, Grinding
