Overview

ISO 11446-2:2012 is an international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that specifies requirements for 13-pole electrical connectors used in road vehicles. These connectors facilitate the electrical connection between towing vehicles and towed vehicles operating with a 12 V nominal supply voltage and are specifically designed for vehicles intended to cross water fords. This standard addresses the dimensional characteristics, contact allocation, performance tests, and environmental durability, including water immersion resistance, ensuring reliable electrical connectivity under harsh conditions.

Key Topics

  • Connector Design and Dimensions
ISO 11446-2 mandates precise dimensional specifications for plugs, sockets, and park sockets allowing secure electrical coupling while enabling easy storage of the plug when disconnected. These dimensions align with those established in ISO 11446-1 to ensure compatibility and interchangeability.

  • Contact Allocation and Terminals
The 13-pole connectors feature standardized contact allocation and designation to support a broad range of vehicle electrical systems. The terminals at the rear side are designed to accept various cable cross-sections as agreed between manufacturer and user, ensuring flexibility in installation.

  • Water Immersion Testing
A critical requirement of ISO 11446-2 is enhanced water ingress protection, validated through rigorous immersion testing. The standard specifies a test procedure where connectors (both plugged and unplugged states) are submerged in water to a depth of 300 mm for 20 minutes under controlled temperatures. The connectors must prevent water ingress to guarantee operational reliability during water fording.

  • Park Socket Functionality
The inclusion of a park socket allows secure storage and protection of the plug when disconnected, preventing damage and contamination, which is essential for vehicles regularly exposed to wet and muddy environments.

Applications

ISO 11446-2:2012 is essential for manufacturers and suppliers involved in the design, production, and maintenance of towing systems for vehicles that routinely operate in off-road or challenging environments involving water crossings. Typical applications include:

  • Caravans and light trailers used in recreational or off-road settings
  • Commercial vehicles and trucks equipped for fording rivers, streams, or flooded roads
  • Emergency and rescue vehicles requiring reliable trailer connections during water operations
  • Any road vehicles and trailers operating with a 12 V electrical system that must ensure secure and water-resistant towing connections

By adhering to this standard, manufacturers enhance the durability, safety, and reliability of vehicle electrical connections, minimizing downtime and corrosion-related failures.

Related Standards

ISO 11446-2:2012 is part of a broader family of standards focused on vehicle towing electrical systems:

  • ISO 11446-1: This part covers 13-pole connectors for vehicles with 12 V nominal supply voltage not intended to cross water fords, complementing Part 2 by addressing standard road conditions.
  • ISO 4091: Defines general requirements, tests, and terminology for connectors used in towing vehicles, which ISO 11446-2 references and expands upon with additional water immersion requirements.
  • ISO 1103: Specifies dimensions for coupling balls used with caravans and light trailers, relevant to mounting locations of connectors.
  • ISO 4141: Addresses multi-core connecting cables, ensuring that cables used with the connectors meet electrical safety and performance standards.

Summary

ISO 11446-2:2012 is a vital standard that supports the safe and reliable electrical linking of towing and towed vehicles operating under wet and harsh conditions. Its focus on water ingress protection, dimensional precision, and functional compatibility makes it indispensable for specialized vehicle applications requiring robust towing connector solutions with a 12 V nominal supply voltage. Compliance ensures enhanced longevity, operational safety, and performance in environments involving water fords or similar challenges.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International
Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 11446-2 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 22, Road vehicles, Subcommittee SC 3, Electrical
and electronic equipment.
This first edition of ISO 11446-1 cancels and replaces the third edition of ISO 11446:2004, which has been
technically revised and divided into two parts, ISO 11446-1 for vehicles not intended to cross water fords and
ISO 11446-2 for vehicles intended to cross water fords.
ISO 11446 consists of the following parts, under the general title Road vehicles — Connectors for the electrical
connection of towing and towed vehicles:
— Part 1: 13-pole connectors for vehicles with 12 V nominal supply voltage not intended to cross water fords
— Part 2: 13-pole connectors for vehicles with 12 V nominal supply voltage intended to cross water fords
