Tractors and machinery for agriculture - Speed Identification Sign (SIS)
This document specifies the dimensions, characteristics, and positioning of Speed Identification Signs (SIS). These signs indicate the maximum equipment ground speed, based on the ground speed design capability, for agricultural field equipment. This document is applicable to agricultural field equipment moving on public roads.

Overview
ISO 20383:2025 - Tractors and machinery for agriculture - Speed Identification Sign (SIS) defines a standardized visual identification system for the maximum specified ground speed of agricultural field equipment used on public roads. The standard specifies the SIS shape, dimensions, colours, materials, positioning and related operator information so that farm machinery speed capabilities are clearly and consistently communicated to other road users and towing operators.
Key topics and requirements
SIS geometry and layout
- Circular sign: 200 mm ± 2 mm diameter, black border 10 mm wide inset up to 5 mm.
- Centre field and outer border: white; numeric speed in black.
- Specified ground speed rounded to nearest 5 (e.g. 40, 45, 50) with units in km/h or mile/h.
- Minimum character sizes: numbers 75 mm high (12 mm stroke); unit letters sized per Table 1.
Materials and performance
- Outdoor durability: test exposure per ISO 2810 (24 months, humid subtropical) with no cracking, blistering or loss of adhesion.
- Adhesive strength: minimum 5,5 N/cm (tested per ISO 29862:2024, Test Method 1); ASTM D3330 and PSTC 101 noted as equivalent references.
- Colour/chromaticity: transilluminated sign chromaticity coordinates specified for consistent white/black appearance under D65 illumination.
Positioning and visibility
- Rear-facing SIS: visible to following road users, mounted upright in a plane perpendicular to travel, ±10° tolerance on y- and z-axis.
- Height: bottom edge 0.6 m to 3.0 m above ground; preferred right-of-centre mounting and unobscured circular shape.
- Forward-facing SIS (optional): 25%–100% of rear sign size (50–200 mm) readable from the towing operator’s platform.
- For towed combinations: only the rearmost SIS needs to be visible from behind; forward SIS on lead implement may inform the towing operator.
Operator information
- Manuals must state that maximum travel speed is the lesser of road limits, vehicle capability, or the specified ground speed of towed equipment.
- Ground speed limitation for combinations equals the lowest specified ground speed in the train.
Applications and users
ISO 20383:2025 is intended for:
- Agricultural equipment manufacturers and decal suppliers (SIS design, materials, production).
- Fleet operators and farmers (compliance, safe transport of implements).
- Safety regulators and vehicle inspection authorities (roadworthiness, marking rules).
- Test laboratories and standards bodies (durability, adhesion, colour testing).
Use cases include marking tractors, implements, trailers and multi-implement combinations for safe, compliant road travel and clear communication of equipment speed capability.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described
in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the different types
of ISO document should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of the
ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).

This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 20383:2017), which has been technically
revised.
The main changes are as follows.
— The term “forestry” was removed from the title.
— In the introduction, the term “implement of husbandry/agricultural equipment” has been replaced with
the term “agricultural field equipment” as defined in ISO 12934.
— In the last sentence of Clause “1 Scope” the list of terms “self-propelled, semi-integral and towed
equipment has been replaced with “agricultural field equipment” as defined in ISO 12934.
— In Clause 1, subclause 6.1.1 and subclause 6.1.3, the term “agricultural vehicle” has been replaced with
“agricultural field equipment” as defined in ISO 12934.
— In 3.2, the definition of “implement of husbandry” has been replaced with the definition of “agricultural
field equipment” according to ISO 12934.
— In Figure 1 of subclause 4.1, the depiction of the symmetrical tolerance has been corrected according to
ISO 129-1.
— In 4.4, the explanation in parenthesis "(e.g. 45 to 50)" has been corrected to "(e.g. 40, 45, 50)".

Introduction
Agricultural field equipment operations include the transport of commodities and equipment from the field
sites to farmsteads, storage facilities and gathering points for movement by mass transit systems. Equipment
often moves between farmsteads and field sites that are not contiguous. Transport may involve moving on
public roads (infrastructure) that permit faster ground speeds than that which is used in the fields or within
the design considerations of the equipment. Design approaches have been identified to permit selected
equipment to move at faster ground speeds in transport configurations. This doc
