Overview
ISO 5758:2002 - Cinematography - Labelling of containers for motion-picture film and magnetic material - specifies the minimum information required on labels and/or accompanying documents to identify processed motion‑picture film and magnetic sound records for international exchange. The standard ensures consistent container labelling for release prints, television prints, and other processed film elements (original negatives, intermediates, sound masters), supporting safe handling, shipping, archiving and playback.
Keywords: ISO 5758, labelling, motion‑picture film, magnetic material, container labelling, cinematography, film labelling standard.
Key Topics and Requirements
The standard sets out the essential data to appear on the container label or accompanying paperwork. Major requirements include:
General
- Purpose: minimum information necessary for exchange of materials.
- Applicability: processed film and magnetic sound records (excludes unexposed raw stock covered by ISO 3042).
Release prints (non‑TV)
- Non‑technical: company name/contact, film title, language version, copy number, reel number, total reels.
- Technical: film gauge (35/16/70 mm), reel length, running time (24/25/30 fps), base (polyester/triacetate), perforation/pitch, color vs B&W, anamorphic vs non‑anamorphic, aspect ratio, emulsion orientation, sound format (optical/magnetic, mono/stereo, analogue/digital).
Prints for television
- Non‑technical: originating department, programme title/registration number, episode info, packing date.
- Technical (per ISO 3640 codes): film gauge (35/16/Super‑16), stock type (C/B/M), aspect ratio, sound type (mono/stereo/SEPMAG/COMMAG/COMOPT/MUTE), emulsion orientation, SEPMAG track positions, reel duration, edge marking.
Processed film elements (except prints)
- Identification: element type (original negative, master positive, duplicate negative, soundtrack negative, sound master) - recommended large, color‑coded labels.
- Technical: gauge, format (anamorphic/non‑anamorphic), aspect ratio, reel length including leaders, perforation type/pitch, base material, emulsion orientation, soundtrack designation and track assignments, noise‑reduction system, test signals in leaders, analogue soundtrack chemistry (silver, high‑magenta, cyan).
Applications and Users
ISO 5758 is used by:
- Film laboratories and processing facilities for consistent output labelling.
- Post‑production and mastering houses to track elements and sound formats.
- Broadcasters and television archives exchanging programme prints.
- Film distributors and cinemas for shipping and inventory control.
- Archives, museums, and restoration specialists for preservation and provenance. Practical benefits include reduced handling errors, clear metadata for playback, and standardized international exchange of film and magnetic media.
Related Standards
- ISO 3640:1982 (referenced for television definition codes)
- ISO 3042:1992 (labelling of raw‑stock motion‑picture films)
- ISO 12612:1997 (interchange of post‑production materials)
For organizations managing physical film or magnetic sound media, ISO 5758 provides the baseline labelling practice to ensure reliable exchange, handling and long‑term preservation.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO
member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical
committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in
liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 3.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards adopted
by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this International Standard may be the subject of
patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 5758 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 36, Cinematography.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 5758:1987), which has been technically revised.
