Overview

ISO 5782-2:1997 specifies standardized test methods for determining the main characteristics of compressed-air filters that should appear in a supplier's literature. It supports ISO 5782-1 by defining how to test and present results so filters can be compared and correctly applied in pneumatic fluid power systems. The part focuses on laboratory test procedures (not routine production testing) and the presentation of data for technical datasheets.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and purpose
    • Standardizes test methods and presentation of test data to facilitate comparison and correct application of filters.
    • Tests are intended for representative samples, not for 100% production inspection.
  • Test conditions
    • Temperature: maintain processed air, equipment and ambient at 25 °C ± 10 °C.
    • Pressures: hold specified pressures within ±2%; preferred test pressures referenced to ISO 5782-1 and ISO 2944.
    • Units: gauge pressure in kPa (bar), temperature in °C, flow rate in dm3/s (ANR).
  • Rated-pressure verification
    • Test three random samples filled with liquid (viscosity ≤ ISO VG 32) and pressurize to 1.5× the proposed rated pressure, hold, then step up to higher multiples (up to 4× or 5× depending on material/temperature) to confirm structural integrity.
    • Failure criteria include fracture, separation, crack, or liquid leakage through the pressure envelope.
  • Flow-rate tests
    • Test circuit and measuring tubes must comply with ISO 6358.
    • Inlet pressures for tests include 250 kPa, 630 kPa, 1 000 kPa (or rated pressure if different).
    • Record steady-state flow and pressure drop up to the lesser of 80 kPa or 20% of inlet pressure.
    • Present results per ISO 5782-1 formats (including port size and filter element type).
  • Reservoir useful-retention-capacity
    • Measure liquid fill to the baffle or marked maximum level on three samples; average gives the rated capacity for filter/reservoir size.

Practical applications and users

Who benefits:

  • Filter manufacturers - for validating performance claims and preparing supplier literature.
  • Test laboratories and third‑party certifiers - for reproducible test methods and reporting.
  • System designers and maintenance engineers - to compare filters, size components, and select appropriate units for compressed air systems.
  • Procurement/specifications teams - to evaluate vendor data and ensure compliance with industry requirements.

Practical uses:

  • Producing consistent datasheets for compressed air filters.
  • Comparing flow vs. pressure-drop performance across products.
  • Verifying mechanical strength and reservoir capacity for safety and reliability.

Related standards

  • ISO 5782-1 (main characteristics and marking)
  • ISO 6358 (flow-rate determination)
  • ISO 5598 (vocabulary)
  • ISO 2944, ISO 3448, ISO 1000, ISO 3 (units, pressures, viscosity, preferred numbers)

Keywords: pneumatic fluid power, compressed-air filters, test methods, supplier's literature, flow-rate tests, rated pressure, retention capacity, ISO 5782-2.

ISO ISO 5782-2:1997(F)
Introduction

valeurs obtenues lors de ces essais;
