Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of
national Standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International
Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical committees. Esch member
body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, govern-
mental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO
collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all
matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to
the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International Standard requires
approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.

Introduction
Micrographics gives rise to numerous international commercial exchanges which often
become difficult, either because of the great variety of terms used in various fields or
languages to express the same concept, or because of the lack or imprecision of defi-
nitions for useful concepts.
To avoid misunderstandings due to this Situation and to facilitate such exchanges it is
advisable to select terms to be used in various languages or countries to express the
same concept and to establish definitions providing satisfactory equivalents for the
various terms in different languages. -
ISO 6196 consists of several Parts published separately, as the work proceeds, their
numbering beginning with 01.
Introduction
La micrographie donne lieu a de tres nombreux echanges commerciaux internationaux
qui sont souvent rendus difficiles, soit par Ia diversite des termes employes dans diffe-
rents milieux ou dans differentes langues pour exprimer une meme notion, soit par
I ’absence ou I ’imprecision des definitions des notions utiles.
Pour eviter les malentendus ayant leur origine dans Ie vocabulaire et faciliter ces echan-
ges, il convient de proceder a un choix des termes a employer dans les differentes lan-
gues ou dans les differents pays pour designer Ia meme notion, et de rediger des defini-
tions assurant une equivalence satisfaisante entre ces differents termes.
L ’ISO 6196 camporte plusieurs Parties publiees separement, au fur et a mesure de leur
elaboration, et dont Ia numerotation commence par 01.
