Overview
ISO/IEC 14496-4:2004/Amd 17:2007 is an international standard amendment focused on conformance testing for coding of audio-visual objects. Specifically, this amendment enhances the original Part 4 of the MPEG-4 standard by including advanced text and 2D graphics conformance requirements. Published by ISO/IEC in 2007, it ensures that implementations of audio-visual coding technologies adhere to strict interoperability and quality standards, particularly in rendering sophisticated text and two-dimensional graphics.
This amendment is a vital part of ISO/IEC 14496-4, which addresses the conformance testing necessary to validate compliant encoding, decoding, and playback of multimedia content. Adhering to these standards ensures consistent, reliable performance across various platforms and devices when handling advanced text and 2D graphic elements embedded within multimedia streams.
Key Topics
- Advanced Text Conformance: Establishes testing protocols for accurate rendering and encoding of complex text elements within audio-visual content, ensuring legibility and proper display across compliant systems.
- 2D Graphics Handling: Defines conformance requirements for two-dimensional graphical objects integrated into coded audio-visual streams, including shapes, animations, and visual overlays.
- Conformance Testing Methodology: Provides detailed procedures for verifying that multimedia content and associated decoders meet the standardized requirements for handling advanced text and graphics.
- Interoperability Assurance: Facilitates seamless integration and compatibility among devices and software by enforcing uniform compliance with these amendment specifications.
- Test Sequences: Includes electronic test files and sequences that allow developers and testers to validate implementations against the defined advanced text and 2D graphics criteria.
Applications
- Multimedia Playback Devices: Ensures that media players, set-top boxes, and mobile devices accurately decode and display enhanced text and graphical information embedded in video streams.
- Broadcast and Streaming Services: Supports broadcasters and streaming platforms in maintaining content quality by conforming to standardized text and graphics coding practices.
- Software Media Encoders/Decoders: Assists software vendors in developing compliant codecs that handle complex graphics and textual data reliably.
- Digital Signage and Interactive Media: Enables the use of advanced graphical overlays and textual interfaces within digital signage and interactive multimedia applications.
- Quality Assurance in Media Production: Helps content producers verify that their materials meet international conformance standards before distribution.
Related Standards
- ISO/IEC 14496 (MPEG-4): The overarching multimedia coding standard that includes several parts covering video, audio, systems, and conformance.
- ISO/IEC 14496-1 to 14496-10: Cover various aspects of MPEG-4, such as systems description, video and audio coding, and scene description.
- ISO/IEC 14496-4:2004: The core part addressing conformance testing methodologies before this amendment.
- Other MPEG Conformance Amendments: Ongoing updates and extensions addressing evolving multimedia coding needs, including 3D graphics and advanced audio features.
By following ISO/IEC 14496-4:2004/Amd 17:2007, developers, manufacturers, and content providers can ensure robust, interoperable multimedia solutions with advanced text and 2D graphics capabilities fully compliant with international standards. This leads to enhanced user experiences in audio-visual applications across diverse industries worldwide.

ISO/IEC 14496-4:2004/Amd.17:2007(E)
Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) and IEC (the International Electrotechnical
Commission) form the specialized system for worldwide standardization. National bodies that are members of
ISO or IEC participate in the development of International Standards through technical committees
established by the respective organization to deal with particular fields of technical activity. ISO and IEC
technical committees collaborate in fields of mutual interest. Other international organizations, governmental
and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO and IEC, also take part in the work. In the field of information
technology, ISO and IEC have established a joint technical committee, ISO/IEC JTC 1.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of the joint technical committee is to prepare International Standards. Draft International
Standards adopted by the joint technical committee are circulated to national bodies for voting. Publication as
an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the national bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO and IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
Amendment 17 to ISO/IEC 14496-4:2004 was prepared by Joint Technical Committee ISO/IEC JTC 1,
Information technology, Subcommittee SC 29, Coding of audio, picture, multimedia and hypermedia
information.
