Overview
ISO 20407:2017 specifies a standardized test method for interfacial tensile and shear fatigue properties of ceramic joining under constant-amplitude cyclic loading at room temperature. It covers joints between ceramic-ceramic, ceramic-metal and ceramic-glass and is intended primarily for fine ceramics (monolithic and reinforced composites). The standard defines test-piece preparation, fixture design, loading modes (tensile/tensile and shear/shear), data collection and reporting to generate reliable cyclic-fatigue and residual-bond-strength data for research, quality control and design.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test principle: Use a cross-bonded test piece cycled at a specified average stress (σm) with constant amplitude loading (sine, triangular or trapezoidal waves) to measure cyclic fatigue life (Nf) and residual interfacial strength.
- Test pieces: Rectangular bars joined to form a symmetrical cross. Recommended bar size: 4 mm × 4 mm × 12 mm; right-angle cross-sections within ±1°; parallelism tolerances specified (longitudinal faces within 0.015 mm).
- Fixture and apparatus:
- Hydraulic or electromechanical fatigue machine in load-control mode; force measurement conforming to ISO 7500‑1.
- Testing fixture designed to avoid asymmetrical stresses; pressure head and supporting fixture dimensions and surface qualities specified. Fixture material recommended with elastic modulus > 200 GPa and hardness (HV) > 3 GPa.
- Micrometers to ISO 3611 for dimensional measurement.
- Loading parameters:
- Minimum force usually 2–5 N; maximum force typically 70–90% of fracture load (or set per service requirement).
- Frequency, waveform and cycle count defined; cycle counting and data recording (digital recommended).
- Measurement & reporting:
- Bonding area and specimen dimensions measured to 0.02 mm accuracy; arithmetic means used for calculations.
- Minimum of three valid test results required per condition.
- Record cyclic life (Nf), time to failure (tf), and residual properties; test validity criteria included.
Applications and users
ISO 20407:2017 is useful for:
- Materials researchers developing or evaluating advanced ceramics and ceramic composites.
- Engineers generating fatigue and design data for bonded ceramic components.
- Quality-control laboratories validating joint reliability in ceramic-ceramic, ceramic-metal or ceramic-glass assemblies.
- Manufacturers of electronic substrates, sensors, high-temperature components and structural ceramic parts where interfacial durability under cyclic loads is critical.
Keywords naturally targeted: ISO 20407:2017, fine ceramics, interfacial tensile fatigue, shear fatigue, ceramic joining, cyclic fatigue test method, constant amplitude loading, material characterization.
