ISO 3116:2026 is an International Standard published by ISO for wrought magnesium and magnesium alloys. It specifies the chemical composition and mechanical properties of magnesium and magnesium alloys for bars and solid sections, tubes and hollow sections, forgings, plate and sheet. In practice, it gives producers, purchasers and laboratories a common way to designate the material, order it, test it and accept it.

What does ISO 3116:2026 specify?

ISO 3116:2026 specifies a designation system and the material requirements for wrought magnesium alloys. Clause 4 defines how the alloys, tempers and product forms are identified, and Clauses 5 to 10 cover composition, mechanical properties, sampling, test pieces, test methods, retests and rounding.

The document is organized into 10 clauses and 3 informative annexes.

AnnexWhat it covers
ANational designations corresponding to the ISO designation
BPhysical properties of wrought magnesium alloys
CHeat-treatment schedules for wrought magnesium alloys

What are the key requirements of ISO 3116:2026?

ISO 3116:2026 ties acceptance to both the alloy designation and the required condition of supply. The most important requirements are the designation rules, the composition limits, the mechanical property tables, and the agreed test and sampling arrangements.

Designation and ordering

Clause 4.1 says the material is designated by symbols given in Table 1 and Table 2 through Table 47. Alloy designations start with the prefix M for magnesium, then use capital letters for the main alloying elements, followed by rounded percentages and a lower-case serial letter when needed. This matters because buyers and suppliers need one unambiguous material name for ordering and traceability.

Clause 4.2 sets the temper symbols: O, F, H × 8, H × 4, H × 2, H112, T5 and T6. Clause 4.3 gives the product-form symbols B, T, F and P. Clause 4.4 says an order should state the symbol or designation, the temper and the product form, and it also requires weight and dimensions. In practice, this lets an order distinguish, for example, a bar in the as-fabricated condition from a plate in a heat-treated condition.

Chemical composition and mechanical properties

Clause 5.1 requires the chemical composition of wrought magnesium alloys, taken as cast analysis at the time the material is cast, to conform to Table 2. Clause 5.2 requires the minimum mechanical properties for the defined temper conditions to conform to Tables 3 through 49. That means acceptance depends on the alloy family, the product form, the temper and, in several tables, the thickness range.

The property tables are the core of the standard. They give the minimum values used to check whether a product meets the specified grade. For a purchaser, this is the part that matters when comparing suppliers or writing a procurement specification.

Testing, sampling and specimen orientation

Clause 5.3 says the frequency of testing is subject to agreement between manufacturer and purchaser. Clause 6 says sampling, batch formation and verification frequency are also subject to agreement. Clause 9 leaves retest conditions to agreement as well. In practice, the standard sets the property targets, while the commercial parties decide how often material is checked and what happens after a failed result.

Clause 7 requires test pieces to be taken in the longitudinal direction. For rolled flat products thicker than 0.6 mm, test pieces may be taken in the long transverse direction. This matters because direction affects measured properties in wrought products, so the test orientation has to match the way the product will be used or assessed.

Test methods and rounding

Clause 8.1 says chemical composition test methods are to be agreed between supplier and customer. Clause 8.2 requires tensile tests to be carried out in accordance with ISO 6892-1. Clause 10 requires reported values to use the same number of decimal places as the value in the standard and to follow the rounding rules of ISO 80000-1:2009, B.3, rule A or B. This keeps reported results consistent when products are compared against the tables.

What terms does ISO 3116:2026 define?

ISO 3116:2026 uses a compact set of symbols for temper, product form and property reporting.

  • F - as fabricated.
  • O - annealed.
  • H112 - strain hardened from working at elevated temperature or from a limited amount of cold work, with mechanical property limits.
  • T5 - cooled from an elevated-temperature shaping process and then artificially aged.
  • T6 - solution heat treated and then artificially aged.
  • B / T / F / P - bars and solid sections, tubes and hollow sections, forgings, and plate and sheet.
  • Rm / Rp0,2 / A - tensile strength, 0.2% proof stress and elongation, which are the property headings used in the mechanical-property tables.
  • RE - neodymium and other heavy rare earth metals.

Who uses ISO 3116:2026?

ISO 3116:2026 is used by manufacturers, suppliers, purchasers and laboratories dealing with wrought magnesium products. It is particularly relevant when specifying bars, tubes, forgings, plate and sheet in a defined alloy and temper.

Quality managers and buyers use it to write purchase orders, compare alloy designations and confirm acceptance criteria. Process engineers and test laboratories use it to select specimen orientation, testing methods and rounding rules. It is also useful for teams that need to map ISO designations to national designations through Annex A.

What changed in ISO 3116:2026 from the previous edition?

ISO 3116:2026 cancels and replaces ISO 3116:2019. The foreword states that this sixth edition is technically revised, and the main stated change is the addition of ISO-MgAl4Ca1 to the text.

Which standards are used with ISO 3116:2026?

ISO 3116:2026 cites three normative references.

  • ISO 80000-1:2009 - gives the rounding rules used for reporting results in Clause 10.
  • ISO 6892-1 - gives the tensile test method used in Clause 8.2.
  • EN 515 - provides the temper designation system referenced in Clause 4.2.

What does the ISO 3116:2026 document contain?

ISO 3116:2026 contains the designation rules, composition tables and mechanical-property tables that define the wrought magnesium alloy grades covered by the standard. Clause 4 gives the material, temper, product-form and ordering designations, including an example order format.

The main technical content is in Table 1 for alloy-element letters, Table 2 for chemical composition, and Tables 3 through 49 for minimum mechanical properties across the listed alloys, tempers and thickness ranges. Annex A maps the ISO designations to national designations, Annex B lists physical properties, and Annex C gives heat-treatment schedules for selected alloys and tempers.

The document is therefore used for material specification, procurement, inspection and property verification, not just for naming the alloys.

4 Designation
4.1 Material
The material shall be designated by symbols as given in Table 1 to Table 47.
The designation for alloys shall consist of a prefix character “M”, which represents magnesium, and not more
than three capital letters representing the alloying elements specified in the greatest amount. It shall be
arranged in order of decreasing percentages, or in alphabetical order if of equal percentages, followed by the
respective percentages rounded off to whole numbers and a serial letter in lower case.
The letters used to represent the alloying elements shall be those in Table 1. The third letter is used when
the third largest amount of element is above or equal to 1 wt.%. If the third and fourth largest amount of
elements are above or equal to 1 wt.%, the higher amount of elements is taken; if of equal percentage, the
third letter is decided by the producer who developed the alloy.

Table 1 — Letters representing alloying elements
Letters Element Name of element Letters Element Name of element
A Al Aluminium N Ni Nickel
B Bi Bismuth P Pb Lead
C Cu Copper Q Ag Silver
D Cd Cadmium R Cr Chromium
E RE Rare earth S Si Silicon
F Fe Iron T Sn Tin
H Th Thorium V Gd Gadolinium
J Sr Strontium W Y Yttrium
K Zr Zirconium X Ca Calcium
L Li Lithium Y Sb Antimony
M Mn Manganese Z Zn Zinc
In rounding percentages, the nearest whole number shall be used. If two choices are possible, for example
when the decimal is followed by a 5 only or a 5 followed only by zeros, the nearest even whole number
shall be used. When a range is specified for the alloying element, the rounded mean shall be used in the
designation. When only a minimum percentage is specified for the alloying element, the rounded minimum
percentage shall be used in the designation. For example:
— an aluminium content of 1,2 wt.% is written as A1;
— an aluminium content of 1,5 wt.% is written as A2;
— an aluminium content of 2,5 wt.% to 3,6 wt.% is written as A3;
— an aluminium content of 2,5 wt.% is written as A2.
The serial letter is defined as “a” or “b” when the two compositions have only minor difference.
For example, ISO-MgAl3Zn1(A) is designated as MAZ31a and ISO-MgAl9Ca1Zn1 is designated as MAXZ911.
A list of national designations corresponding to this document is given in Annex A. A table of physical
properties of the listed alloys is given in Annex B.
4.2 Temper designation
The following symbols shall be used for temper designation:
— O: annealed;
— F: as fabricated;
— H × 8: fully hardened (stain hardened to give maximum ultimate tensile strength);
— H × 4: half hardened (stain hardened to give an ultimate tensile strength approximately midway between
that of annealed and H × 8 temper);
— H × 2: quarter hardened (stain hardened to give an ultimate tensile strength approximately midway
between that of annealed and H × 4 temper);
— H112: strain hardened from working at elevated temperature or from a limited amount of cold work, and
for which there are mechanical properties limits;
— T5: cooled from an elevated temperature shaping process and then artificially aged;
— T6: solution heat treated and then artificially aged.
The temper designations shall be in accordance with EN 515.

Details of heat treatments are given in Annex C.
4.3 Designations of product form
The following symbols shall be used for product form:
— B: bars and solid sections;
— T: tubes and hollow sections;
— F: forgings;
— P: plate and sheet.
4.4 Designation of ordering
Designation of ordering shall be specified by symbol or designation, temper and product form. Example is as
follows. In addition, the weight and dimensions shall be specified.
EXAMPLE An order for magnesium bars, conforming to this document, of magnesium alloy MAZ31a, delivered in
the as-fabricated condition (F) is as follows:
