Overview

ISO 8669-1:1988 - Urine collection bags - Part 1: Vocabulary defines the standardized terms used in international standards for urine collection bags. Prepared by ISO/TC 173 (Technical systems and aids for disabled or handicapped persons), this part sets common language for components, accessories and fastening devices used with urine collection bags. The standard does not define medical terms, nor does it recommend any specific product design, style or size.

Key topics

The document provides precise definitions and preferred synonyms for terms such as:

  • urine collection bag and urine collection bag assembly
  • inlet tubing and outlet tubing
  • urine drip chamber (to minimize micro‑organism migration and allow visual flow checks)
  • drainage tap, outlet tubing restraint, cap, connector and adaptor
  • air vent (air pressure equalization)
  • sampling site (resealable for aseptic sample removal)
  • graduation / scale and tear site
  • attachment point and a range of fastening devices: bed hanger, leg strap, waist strap, pocket-support, floor stand
  • non‑return valve (noted as deprecated synonym: anti‑reflux valve)

Additional features of the standard:

  • Synonyms are listed in order of preference; deprecated synonyms are explicitly marked.
  • Bilingual English/French content and alphabetical indexes for both languages are provided to aid clarity and translation.

Applications

ISO 8669-1:1988 is a foundational reference for anyone who needs consistent terminology relating to urine collection bags:

  • Manufacturers and product designers - for clear component labeling and product documentation.
  • Regulatory and conformity assessment bodies - to ensure consistent interpretation of requirements in testing and approval procedures.
  • Procurement and specification writers - to prepare unambiguous tender documents and technical specifications.
  • Healthcare engineers and facility planners - for specifying compatible accessories and mounting/fastening solutions.
  • Standards committees and translators - for harmonized term usage across documents and languages.

Using a common vocabulary reduces ambiguity in product requirements, testing protocols, clinical instructions and regulatory texts.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of
national Standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International
Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical committees. Esch member
body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, govern-
mental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO
collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all
matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to
the member bodies for approval before their acceptance as International Standards by
the ISO Council. They are approved in accordance with ISO procedures requiring at
least 75 % approval by the member bodies voting.
International Standard ISO 8669-1 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 173,
Technical Systems and aids for disabled or handicapped persons.
Users should note that all International Standards undergo revision from time to time
and that any reference made herein to any other International Standard implies its
latest edition, unless otherwise stated.
