Overview
IEC 60297-3-103:2004 - Mechanical structures for electronic equipment - Dimensions of mechanical structures of the 482,6 mm (19 in) series - Part 3-103: Keying and alignment pin defines the additional interface dimensions for keying devices and alignment pins used with 19 in subracks and plug-in units. This Part supplements IEC 60297-3-101 and may be used in conjunction with IEC 60297-3-102. The standard provides dimensional, arrangement and functional rules that prevent incorrect insertion, ensure mechanical alignment and allow retrofit/change of keys.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and purpose
- Specifies only the additional interface dimensions for keying and alignment pins beyond those in IEC 60297-3-101.
- Intended to prevent misarrangement of board-type and box-type plug-in units.
- Interface and dimensional detail
- Diagrams and figures give detailed dimensions in millimetres for subrack keying interfaces, plug-in unit keying chambers and key profiles.
- References common pitch and offsets used in 19 in mechanical structures (e.g., 5.08 mm pitch lines and a 2.54 mm printed-board offset shown in the figures).
- Key design and retention
- Keys are specified for self-retaining snap-in assembly with defined geometry to allow four programmable positions per chamber.
- Key retention features (spring load or similar) and tolerance zones are provided to ensure secure mounting and repeatability.
- Programming of keys
- Standard defines chamber identification (A–F), pin positions (1–4 and N = no key) and a programming scheme that intentionally blocks incorrect insertions when mismatched.
- Guidance for location: recommended lower-side keying for 3U units; both upper and lower for 6U and 9U.
- Alignment and electrical contact
- Includes provisions for alignment and/or electrical contact receptacles in subrack guide rails and inspection dimensions to ensure reliable mating.
Applications and users
IEC 60297-3-103 is used by:
- Subrack, chassis and plug-in unit manufacturers designing 19 in equipment
- PCB and backplane designers who must align board reference planes and receptacles
- System integrators, telecom and data-centre hardware engineers who require keyed configurations to prevent misinsertion
- Test laboratories and compliance teams verifying mechanical interoperability Practical benefits: reduces insertion errors, protects sensitive modules, simplifies field retrofitting and enforces consistent mechanical interfaces across vendors.
