Overview
IEC 62788-5-1:2020/AMD1:2022 is an essential international amendment issued by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) concerning measurement procedures for materials used in photovoltaic (PV) modules. Specifically, it focuses on edge seal materials-a critical component that protects PV modules by ensuring their durability and environmental resistance. This amendment updates suggested test methods for assessing the properties and performance of edge seal materials, helping manufacturers, laboratories, and researchers maintain high-quality, reliable photovoltaic modules.
The IEC 62788 series, under which this document is categorized, aims to standardize measurement procedures for photovoltaic materials, promoting consistency and facilitating international cooperation in solar PV module testing and certification.
Key Topics
This amendment refines and supplements the original IEC 62788-5-1:2020 standard, with an emphasis on several pivotal aspects:
- Edge Seal Testing Methods: Updated procedures for evaluating edge seal materials, including adhesion, dielectric strength, and mechanical properties relevant to PV module longevity.
- Adhesion Tests: Introduction and revision of specific adhesion tests such as lap shear strength and the 180° peel test provide precise ways to measure bonding quality between edge seals and module components.
- Dielectric Strength Testing: Adjustments to dielectric testing requirements to better reflect true electrical insulation capabilities of the edge seal films.
- Specimen Preparation: Guidelines on preparing test samples including recommendations on dimensions, shapes, and handling to avoid mechanical damage-crucial for generating reliable test data.
- Removal of Certain Outdated Tests: Some test clauses, including dielectric strength degradation, water immersion testing, and coefficient of thermal expansion assessments, have been voided, streamlining the testing process to focus on essential performance indicators.
- Test Reporting: Clarification that test results should be reported by testing laboratories (rather than agencies), emphasizing traceability and professional responsibility.
These refinements help align testing practices with current technological advancements and industry needs, ensuring that edge seals perform reliably in diverse environmental conditions.
Applications
Edge seals play a vital role in photovoltaic module integrity by sealing the glass, encapsulant, and backsheet, thus preventing moisture ingress and environmental damage. The standardized test methods outlined in IEC 62788-5-1:2020/AMD1:2022 apply in:
- PV Module Manufacturing: Enabling manufacturers to verify the suitability of edge seal materials for long-term durability and adhesion quality.
- Quality Control and Assurance: Laboratories use these test methods to certify module compliance with durability standards, ensuring consumer confidence and regulatory acceptance.
- Research and Development: Innovators in PV materials utilize these procedures to assess new edge seal compounds and formulations, accelerating improvements in PV module lifespan and performance.
- Certification Bodies: Independent certification organizations apply these amendments to uphold uniform international standards for photovoltaic modules, promoting market access globally.
Utilizing these test methods helps mitigate risks related to module failures caused by edge seal degradation, ultimately increasing PV system reliability and return on investment.
Related Standards
To comprehensively address photovoltaic module materials and their testing, IEC 62788-5-1:2020/AMD1:2022 connects with multiple related standards:
- IEC 62788 Series: Other parts of the IEC 62788 family address measurement procedures for encapsulants, backsheets, and other PV module materials.
- IEC TS 62788-2:2017: Provides detailed guidance and test recommendations for backsheets, referencing peel test methods related to seals.
- IEC 60243 Series: Concerns dielectric strength and testing protocols essential for electrical insulation assessments, cited and updated in this amendment.
- ISO/IEC Directives: The standard follows ISO/IEC guidelines to ensure consistent development and application of international electrotechnical standards.
Together, these standards provide a holistic framework to assess all critical materials within photovoltaic modules, supporting the global solar energy sector’s quality and safety needs.
This amendment to IEC 62788-5-1 is a key resource for industry stakeholders aiming to enhance the reliability of photovoltaic modules through rigorous and standardized testing of edge seal materials. Compliance not only supports product performance but also fosters international harmonization in solar PV technology development and certification.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as "IEC Publication(s)"). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
Publications.
8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
9) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
