Overview
IEC 61196-1-215:2016 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies environmental test methods for coaxial communication cables, focusing specifically on high temperature cable ageing. This standard outlines a thermal ageing test procedure designed to evaluate the transmission performance and mechanical integrity of coaxial cables subjected to accelerated temperature-induced ageing.
The test simulates the chemical and physical degradation processes that occur in cable materials over time when exposed to elevated temperatures. It helps manufacturers and engineers predict the long-term reliability and performance of coaxial cables under harsh environmental conditions by measuring changes in key transmission characteristics and mechanical properties after exposure.
Key Topics
- Thermal Ageing Test Method: Defines a qualitative test applying high temperatures to accelerate material aging in coaxial cables, assessing the impact on performance parameters.
- Transmission Performance Evaluation: Measurement of crucial radio frequency (RF) characteristics including insertion loss, return loss, passive intermodulation, RF leakage, time delay, and impedance changes before and after ageing.
- Mechanical Integrity Monitoring: Evaluation of cable conductor movement, dielectric stability, and cable sheath dimensional changes resulting from thermal exposure.
- Test Conditions: Specifies minimum test duration (typically 2,000 hours), sample preparation, test chamber requirements aligned with IEC 60068-2-2, and procedures for initial and final measurements.
- Acceptance Criteria: Performance degradation limits clarified in the detailed specification to determine if the cable passes the high temperature ageing stress test.
- Acceleration Factor Calculation: Annex A provides guidance on using the Arrhenius equation to calculate acceleration factors based on different test and operating temperatures to predict cable lifespan under normal conditions.
Applications
IEC 61196-1-215:2016 is essential for manufacturers, designers, and quality assurance engineers involved in:
- Coaxial Cable Design and Development: Ensuring materials and cable constructions withstand prolonged high temperature exposure without detrimental effects on signal transmission.
- Quality Control and Certification: Demonstrating compliance with industry requirements for cable durability and reliability in telecommunications, broadcasting, aerospace, and industrial communication systems.
- Reliability Testing and Product Validation: Accelerated ageing tests help predict operational lifespan and identify potential failure mechanisms early in the development cycle.
- Environmental Stress Testing: Applicable for cables intended for use in environments with elevated temperatures such as outdoor installations, underground conduits, or industrial plants.
- Material Selection Optimization: Supporting material choice decisions by measuring the thermal stability and mechanical resilience of cable components.
Related Standards

- IEC 60068-2-2: Environmental testing - test method for dry heat exposure aligned with the thermal ageing test environment.
- IEC 62506: Methods for product accelerated testing - provides additional guidance on acceleration testing concepts relevant to this ageing test.

This standard is pivotal for maintaining the integrity and performance of coaxial communication infrastructures exposed to elevated temperatures. Implementing IEC 61196-1-215:2016 helps ensure long-term reliability, supports product innovation, and underpins quality assurance frameworks pivotal for critical communication cable applications worldwide.
