Overview

IEC 61196-1-101:2025 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies electrical test methods for determining the conductor DC resistance of coaxial communication cables. This second edition, replacing the 2005 version, incorporates significant technical revisions to ensure more precise and standardized testing procedures. The document focuses on testing coaxial cables-critical components in communication infrastructure-ensuring reliable electrical performance by verifying DC resistance values under controlled conditions.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Application
Applies exclusively to coaxial communication cables, covering the methodology for measuring conductor DC resistance, a key parameter affecting signal integrity.

  • Test Equipment Requirements

    • DC resistance measurement tools with accuracy better than 0.5%
    • Temperature measurement devices with at least 0.1°C accuracy
    • Length measurement instruments with accuracy no less than 0.2%
  • Test Sample Preparation
Test cable length must be at least 1 meter with properly prepared ends to minimize contact resistance and ensure current flows accurately through all cable elements.

  • Test Procedure

    • Pre-condition cable at target test temperature for temperature stabilization
    • Calibrate testing instruments
    • Measure and record cable length
    • Perform resistance measurements for inner and outer conductors individually or combined (loop resistance)
    • Record test temperature during measurement
  • Expression of Results
Results normalized to a reference length of 1000 meters and corrected to the standard temperature of 20°C. The standard provides formulas incorporating temperature correction factors and resistance-temperature coefficients for common conductor materials (copper, aluminum).

  • Failure Criteria
Cable conductor DC resistance values must comply with limits specified in relevant industry standards or manufacturer specifications.

  • Test Report Content
Reports must include: test temperature, test equipment details with certification, cable length, measured results, operator identity, and test date.

Applications

IEC 61196-1-101:2025 is essential for manufacturers, testers, and quality assurance professionals dealing with coaxial communication cables in sectors such as:

  • Telecommunications and broadband internet networks
  • Broadcast and video signal distribution systems
  • RF and microwave communication infrastructure
  • Data centers and enterprise networking solutions
  • Aerospace and defense communication systems requiring rigorous cable performance validation

Testing DC resistance as standardized by IEC 61196-1-101 ensures that coaxial cables meet electrical performance requirements, contributing to system reliability, signal quality, and compliance with international quality benchmarks.

Related Standards

  • IEC 61196-1: Generic specification for coaxial communication cables – provides foundational definitions and requirements referenced in IEC 61196-1-101.
  • Other parts of the IEC 61196 series, covering various physical and electrical test methods, construction requirements, and performance parameters for coaxial cables.
  • Relevant industry standards and manufacturer specifications defining allowable resistance thresholds or specific conditions for particular cable applications.

These standards together provide a comprehensive framework for the design, testing, and certification of coaxial communication cables in the global marketplace.

By adhering to IEC 61196-1-101:2025, stakeholders can ensure accurate conductor DC resistance measurement, maintaining cable quality and optimal performance for critical communication technologies.
