Overview

The IEC 62552-2:2015/AMD2:2025 is the second amendment to the international standard governing household refrigerating appliances. This document, published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), updates performance requirements and test methods to ensure reliable and uniform evaluation of domestic refrigerators and freezers. It primarily focuses on enhancing the accuracy and transparency of appliance performance ratings, particularly related to temperature control, freezing capacity, and storage conditions. By adopting this amendment, manufacturers and testing bodies can ensure appliances meet internationally recognized benchmarks critical for consumer safety and energy efficiency.

Key Topics

  • Performance Testing Procedures
Amendment 2 refines test methods including loading arrangements, temperature settings, and stability criteria that must be met during appliance evaluation. It stresses consistent package placement on shelves and drawers for reproducible test conditions.

  • Freezing Capacity and Four-Star Rating Criteria
Specific guidance improves how the freezing time and capacity of four-star compartments are measured. This includes updated light load weights calculated against compartment volume and new metrics for determining freezing performance based on average package temperatures.

  • Temperature Control Adjustments
Clear instructions are established for test conditions when target compartment temperatures fall outside standard settings - to use the closest achievable temperature below the target minus 2 K, ensuring accurate test reproducibility.

  • Storage Conditions for Specialized Compartments
The amendment includes requirements for wine storage compartments, specifying maximum permissible temperature rise during defrost and recovery phases and temperature fluctuation limits during freezing or cooling tests.

  • Data Recording and Test Reporting
Enhanced protocols specify critical parameters that must be logged during tests, such as temperature averages, peak-to-peak temperature amplitudes, and timing data to validate conformity with performance standards.

Applications

  • Household Appliance Manufacturing
Manufacturers utilize the amendment’s performance requirements to design refrigerators and freezers that comply with international quality and energy efficiency standards, enabling smoother market access globally.

  • Product Testing and Certification
Testing laboratories follow these updated rigorous methods and criteria for evaluating products, ensuring accuracy in performance claims such as freezing capabilities and temperature stability.

  • Regulatory Compliance and Market Surveillance
Regulatory bodies and market inspectors apply the standard’s protocols for conformity assessment, safeguarding consumer interests by verifying product safety and performance consistency.

  • Consumer Guidance and Labeling
Reliable performance ratings help consumers make informed choices about refrigeration appliances, particularly where freezing performance and energy efficiency are critical.

Related Standards

  • IEC 62552-1:2015
Covers characteristics and additional test methods for household refrigerating appliances complementing Part 2 amendments.

  • ISO/IEC Directives
The amendment complies with international guidelines for standard development, ensuring global uniformity and facilitating collaboration between IEC and ISO.

  • IEC 62252 Series
Addresses the broader context of characteristics and test methods for household refrigerators, of which IEC 62552-2 forms a vital component.

  • Energy Efficiency and Safety Standards
The amendment works alongside standards focusing on energy consumption and electrical safety in household appliances to provide comprehensive product requirements.

By implementing IEC 62552-2:2015/AMD2:2025, stakeholders benefit from clearer performance requirements and improved testing reproducibility essential for advancing household refrigeration technology towards greater consumer confidence and sustainability.

all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as "IEC Publication(s)"). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
