Overview

IEC 60264-5-1:1997+AMD1:2003 CSV is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) focusing on the packaging of winding wires. Specifically, this part defines the basic dimensions for cylindrical barrelled delivery spools with conical flanges, which are crucial for the storage, transportation, and application of winding wires used in electrical windings. This consolidated edition combines the original 1997 version and the 2003 amendment, ensuring users have the most updated guidelines without needing to order amendments separately.

The standard ensures uniformity and compatibility in spool dimensions worldwide, facilitating international trade and quality assurance in the manufacturing and retailing of winding wires.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Purpose
IEC 60264-5-1 specifies the fundamental dimensional parameters of cylindrical barrelled spools with conical flanges designed for winding wire packaging. This provides manufacturers and users with clear specifications to maintain standardization.

  • Basic Dimensions and Tolerances
The standard outlines precise measurements including spool diameter, length, flange dimensions, and tolerances based on ISO 2768-1 (class "m") general tolerances. Table 1 in the document lists nominal dimensions and permissible deviations for typical spool types, such as sizes 100, 125, 160, 200, and 250 mm.

  • Material Requirements
While the standard focuses mainly on dimensions, it notes that material specifications for spools should be detailed in purchaser orders, allowing flexibility depending on application needs.

  • Design Specifications
The spool features a cylindrical barrel shape with conical flanges angled at 45° and 60°, as illustrated in the standard’s diagrams. Rounded edges are specified to ensure safety and wire integrity during handling.

  • Compliance and Standardization
IEC 60264-5-1 promotes international coherence by serving as a reference for manufacturers and suppliers, reducing dimensional discrepancies and improving compatibility in the electrical industry supply chain.

Applications

  • Electrical Wire Industry
The standard is extensively used by manufacturers and distributors of insulated winding wires, ensuring delivery spools meet internationally accepted size and design criteria.

  • Transformer and Motor Manufacturing
Companies producing electrical equipment require standardized spools for winding motors, transformers, and inductors. Consistent spool dimensions improve winding efficiency and operational reliability.

  • Quality Control and Procurement
Procurement teams use this standard to specify spool dimensions clearly, reducing errors in supply and ensuring that winding wires come packaged in compatible spools that fit automated or manual winding equipment.

  • International Trade and Export
Businesses involved in cross-border shipment of winding wires rely on IEC 60264-5-1 to comply with international standards, minimizing customs issues related to packaging non-conformities.

Related Standards

  • IEC 60851 – Methods of test for insulated wires, providing electrical and physical testing procedures relevant for winding wires.

  • IEC 60317 – Specifies requirements and characteristics for insulated wires used in winding applications.

  • ISO 2768-1 – General tolerances for linear and angular dimensions without individual tolerance indications; referenced for tolerance class "m" in IEC 60264-5-1.

  • IEC 60264 Series – Addresses overall packaging methods for winding wires, with this part 5-1 focusing specifically on spool design.

Practical Value

Using IEC 60264-5-1:1997+A1:2003 ensures:

  • Consistent spool dimensions that fit winding machines and storage racks globally.
  • Reduction in manufacturing errors and enhanced wire handling safety.
  • Clear communication between suppliers and buyers through unified dimensional specifications.
  • Increased efficiency in electrical equipment production utilizing standardized wire packaging.

By adhering to IEC 60264-5-1, industries dealing with winding wires benefit from standardized packaging, improved interoperability, and streamlined supply chain operations. This contributes directly to the reliability and quality of electrical and electronic devices employing wound components.

Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence
between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in
the latter.
5) IEC provides no marking procedure to indicate its approval and cannot be rendered responsible for any
equipment declared to be in conformity with an IEC Publication.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
