Overview
IEC 60641-3-2:2007 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies detailed requirements for presspaper used in electrical applications. This standard is part 3, sheet 2 of the IEC 60641 series, which covers specifications for individual materials used in pressboard and presspaper manufacturing. It focuses on different types of presspaper including types P.2.1, P.4.1, P.4.2, P.4.3, and P.6.1, detailing material composition, physical properties, and electrical performance requirements.
The 2007 edition introduces key updates from the previous 1992 edition, such as replacing the type P.6 with a new variant while maintaining its designation, deleting type P.7, and simplifying thickness-related properties to better align with current industry needs. The presspaper materials covered include 100% sulphate wood pulp, 100% cotton, or a mixture of both.
Key Topics
Material Composition
- 100% sulphate wood pulp
- 100% cotton
- Mixtures of sulphate wood pulp and cotton
Types Covered
- P.2.1: High density, high chemical purity
- P.4.1: High chemical purity, high oil absorption, soft porous
- P.4.2: 100% cotton presspaper
- P.4.3: Mixed sulphate wood pulp and cotton presspaper
- P.6.1: Low porosity type, suitable for dry applications
Physical and Mechanical Properties
- Thickness tolerance (±10%)
- Apparent density ranges from 0.95 to 1.3 g/cm³ depending on type
- Tensile strength (both unfolded and folded) with machine and cross-machine direction specifics
- Elongation minimum values in machine and cross-machine directions
- Shrinkage limits to ensure dimensional stability
- Plybond resistance to ensure layer adhesion
- Moisture and ash content limits for chemical purity and performance
Electrical Performance
- Electric strength values tested in air and oil
- Conductivity and pH ranges for aqueous extracts to control contamination
- Oil absorption rates indicating suitability for insulating oil environments
Applications
IEC 60641-3-2 presspaper types are essential materials in the electrical industry, particularly for the manufacture and insulation of electrical equipment. Key practical uses include:
Transformer insulation:
Presspaper serves as an insulating barrier in high-voltage transformers where mechanical strength and electrical resistance are critical.Electrical switchgear:
The material ensures dielectric stability and mechanical durability in switchgear components exposed to electrical stresses.Capacitors and coils:
Used as insulation layers that require controlled thickness, tensile strength, and electrical properties for efficient performance.Dry-type electrical applications:
Specifically, P.6.1 presspaper is tailored for environments where low porosity and dry insulation are imperative.
The standard guarantees consistency in presspaper quality, ensuring reliable dielectric performance, mechanical integrity, and longevity of electrical components.
Related Standards
- IEC 60641-1: Definitions and general requirements for pressboard and presspaper for electrical purposes, essential for understanding the terminology and basic concepts applied in IEC 60641-3-2.
- IEC 60641-2:2004: Methods of testing pressboard and presspaper materials, providing the test procedures supporting the requirements specified in IEC 60641-3-2.
- Other IEC 60641 Series Parts: Cover additional materials and specifications related to pressboard and presspaper, supporting a comprehensive framework for electrical insulation materials.
Summary
IEC 60641-3-2:2007 defines rigorous, internationally accepted criteria for electrical presspaper materials, addressing mechanical, chemical, and electrical properties critical to high-performance insulation systems.
