Overview
The IEC 60819-3-3:2011 standard specifies requirements for unfilled aramid (aromatic polyamide) papers used for electrical purposes. As part of the IEC 60819 series on non-cellulosic electrical insulating papers, this third edition provides detailed specifications for four types of unfilled aramid papers distinguished by their manufacturing processes and physical properties. The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) developed this standard to promote uniformity and ensure high performance in electrical insulation materials.
This edition introduces significant updates, including a shift in normative testing references from IEC 60554-2:2001 (cellulosic papers) to IEC 60819-2 methods, and the addition of very thin, low-density calendered papers for lamination (Type 4). It replaces the second edition published in 2006 to better cater to modern electrical insulation requirements.
Key Topics
Aramid Paper Types
IEC 60819-3-3 covers four types of unfilled aramid papers used for electrical insulation:- Type 1: Calendered paper with standard properties
- Type 2: Calendered paper with enhanced tearing resistance and better conformability
- Type 3: Uncalendered paper
- Type 4: Calendered paper with lower density, suited for lamination processes
Performance Requirements
The standard defines precise physical and electrical characteristics such as:- Thickness tolerances based on nominal values
- Grammage (mass per unit area) ranges specific to paper type and thickness
- Apparent density limits for each type
- Mechanical properties including tensile strength, elongation at break, and edge tearing resistance
- Electrical strength, measured as minimum electric breakdown voltage per unit thickness
- Thermal shrinkage limits after heating to ensure dimensional stability
Testing and Sampling
Conformity to requirements is assessed using test methods detailed in IEC 60819-2 specific to non-cellulosic papers. Sampling procedures conform to ISO 186 to determine average quality and ensure statistical reliability of testing outcomes.Safety and Application Notes
Users selecting materials must consider actual application-specific performance requirements - the standard does not guarantee suitability by itself. Proper application of test methods is essential for safe handling.
Applications
Unfilled aramid papers specified in IEC 60819-3-3 are integral to various electrical insulation applications where high temperature resistance, mechanical strength, and excellent dielectric properties are critical. Key applications include:
Electrical Machine Insulation
Used as insulating layers in transformers, motors, and generators to enhance electrical and thermal performance.Laminated Insulation Systems
Especially relevant for Type 4 papers which have lower density and tailored thicknesses optimal for lamination onto electrical components.High-Performance Electrical Components
Suitable for insulation in capacitors, coils, and other components requiring durable, non-cellulosic dielectric materials.Industrial Electrical Equipment
Aramid paper's strength and heat resistance make it ideal for electrical insulation in harsh operational environments such as power plants and heavy machinery.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence
between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in
the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
Publications.

INTRODUCTION
This International Standard is one of a series which deals with non-cellulosic papers for
electrical purposes.
The series consists of three parts:
– Part 1: Definitions and general requirements (IEC 60819-1).
– Part 2: Methods of test (IEC 60819-2).
– Part 3: Specifications for individual materials (IEC 60819-3).
This standard is one of the sheets comprising Part 3:
Sheet 3: Unfilled aramid (aromatic polyamide) papers
60819-3-3 IEC:2011 – 5 –
NON-CELLULOSIC PAPERS FOR ELECTRICAL PURPOSES –
Part 3: Specifications for individual materials –
Sheet 3: Unfilled aramid (aromatic polyamide) papers
1 Scope
This sheet of IEC 60819-3 specifies requirements for four types of unfilled aramid papers:
Type 1: calendered paper;
Type 2: calendered paper, with improved tearing resistance and conformability;
Type 3: uncalendered paper;
Type 4: calendered paper, with lower density for laminating.
Materials which conform to this specification meet established levels of performance.
However, the selection of material by a user for a specific application should be based on the
actual requirements necessary for adequate performance in that application and not based on
this specification alone.
SAFETY WARNING: It is the responsibility of the user of the methods contained or referred to
in this document to ensure that they are used in a safe manner.
2 Normative references
The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of this document.
