Overview

IEC 63522-14:2025 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). It specifies the test methods and measurement procedures to assess mould growth on electrical relays. This standard is part 14 of the IEC 63522 series, which focuses on electrical relay tests and measurements. The purpose of IEC 63522-14:2025 is to evaluate how mould development during transportation, storage, and operational use impacts relay performance and functionality.

This standard defines a controlled test procedure based on environmental conditions that electrical relays are likely to encounter. It ensures that relays can maintain their operational integrity even when exposed to mould growth, which is a critical factor for reliability in diverse climates and industries.

Keywords: electrical relay testing, mould growth test, IEC 63522-14, relay performance, environmental testing, mould impact on relays

Key Topics

  • Scope:
IEC 63522-14:2025 covers the assessment of mould growth on relays and its effects on their performance during transportation, storage, and operational use.

  • Test Procedure:
The test follows IEC 60068-2-10 Test J guidelines for mould growth, employing a 28-day incubation period (severity 1). Initial and post-test electrical and mechanical measurements are conducted as per IEC 63522-7 to identify any functional deterioration due to mould.

  • Test Conditions:
Specific environmental and test variables include the choice of test variant, incubation duration, preconditioning cleaning, inoculation methods, and timing of intermediate visual inspections.

  • Evaluation Criteria:
Visual examination of mould extent, functional testing compliance, and assessment of any property or performance degradation. Any mould growth degree is acceptable provided the relay passes functional tests aligned with product specifications.

  • Documentation:
Detailed test reporting includes relay description, test parameters, incubation conditions, inoculation method, mould observations, cleaning treatments, and performance evaluation against predefined criteria.

Applications

IEC 63522-14:2025 is essential for manufacturers, testing laboratories, and quality assurance teams involved in:

  • Electrical Relay Manufacturing:
Ensures relays are evaluated for mould resistance and maintain operational performance under challenging environmental conditions.

  • Environmental Reliability Testing:
Provides a standardized approach to simulate real-world exposure to mould, supporting durability and robustness validation for relays used in humid or mould-prone environments.

  • Transportation and Storage Compliance:
Assessing the susceptibility of relays to mould growth during transit and warehousing protects against degradation and failure prior to deployment.

  • Industrial and Commercial Electrical Systems:
Supports industries relying on relay reliability in harsh conditions including utilities, automation, transportation, and building management.

Related Standards

To fully implement IEC 63522-14:2025 testing, familiarity with several related IEC and ISO standards is necessary:

  • IEC 60068-2-10 - Environmental testing, mold growth test (Test J), which forms the basis of mould growth assessment procedures.
  • IEC 63522-0 - Electrical relays general requirements and guidance applicable to the broader test series.
  • IEC 63522-7 - Functional tests for electrical relays, used to evaluate relay performance before and after mould exposure.
  • IEC 60068-1 - General guidance on environmental testing, providing foundational context for environmental effects on electrical equipment.

By integrating IEC 63522-14 with these standards, organizations achieve comprehensive evaluation protocols for relay resistance to environmental threats and ensure consistent international testing practices.

IEC 63522-14:2025 is an important standard for electrical relay testing that addresses mould growth challenges, helping ensure relay reliability and safety in diverse environmental conditions while supporting international harmonization of testing methods.

ELECTRICAL RELAYS – TESTS AND MEASUREMENTS –

Part 14: Mould growth
FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
Publications.
8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
9) IEC draws attention to the possibility that the implementation of this document may involve the use of (a)
patent(s). IEC takes no position concerning the evidence, validity or applicability of any claimed patent rights in
respect thereof. As of the date of publication of this document, IEC had not received notice of (a) patent(s), which
may be required to implement this document. However, implementers are cautioned that this may not represent
the latest information, which may be obtained from the patent database available at https://patents.iec.ch. IEC
shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
