Overview
IEC 60335-2-2 Amendment 2 (2006) updates the international safety requirements for household and similar electrical appliances, specifically focusing on vacuum cleaners and water-suction cleaning appliances. This amendment broadens the scope to include automatic battery-powered vacuum cleaners alongside conventional models, responding to the increasing prevalence of robotic cleaning devices. Developed by IEC Technical Committee 61, this standard ensures enhanced safety protocols and testing methodologies to protect users and improve device reliability.
Key Topics
- Scope Extension: Includes automatic battery-powered vacuum cleaners and their docking stations alongside traditional vacuum cleaners.
- Definitions: Introduces clear terminology for automatic battery-powered cleaners and docking stations, defining operational parameters such as dust bag/filter condition and the working perimeter.
- Classification: Vacuum cleaners, including automatic battery-powered types, can be classified as Class 0 if the rated voltage does not exceed 150 V; mobile components of battery-powered cleaners must be Class II or III.
- Marking and Instructions: Requires specific markings on mobile units, including manufacturer identification and docking station model reference. Also mandates safety instructions for room preparation and continued attention during use.
- Mechanical Strength and Construction: Mobile parts of battery-powered cleaners must withstand mechanical loads without damage or short circuits. Safety features include automatic movement stop if hazardous parts lose contact with the cleaning surface, and protection against falls from edges like stairs.
- Electrical and Thermal Safety: Docking stations with suction modes undergo blocked air inlet tests to ensure temperature limits are not exceeded. Thermal cut-outs in battery cleaners must be non-resetting to prevent unsafe restarts.
- Operational Performance: Testing includes battery discharge conditions, speed limits during operation on slopes, and rotor lock scenarios to evaluate abnormal function.
- Symbols and Safety Signage: Adopts ISO 3864-1 standards for safety colors and graphical symbols, ensuring consistency and clarity in markings.
Applications
IEC 60335-2-2 Amendment 2 applies to the design, testing, and certification of a broad range of vacuum cleaning appliances in household and similar environments, including:
- Automatic Battery-Powered Vacuum Cleaners (robotic vacuum cleaners):
- Ensures safe operation without human control within designated zones.
- Validates docking station safety with charging and dust disposal functions.
- Addresses unique mechanical and electrical safety challenges posed by autonomous movement.
- Traditional Vacuum Cleaners and Water-Suction Cleaning Devices:
- Reinforces existing safety criteria and testing protocols.
- Incorporates water-suction cleaning head requirements, emphasizing safe motorized components for wet cleaning.
Manufacturers, safety certifiers, and testing laboratories use this amendment to guarantee compliance for new and evolving vacuum cleaner technologies, promoting safer products in the consumer market.
Related Standards
- IEC 60312: Specifies methods for measuring vacuum cleaner performance and suitability for household use - referenced for operational zone definition and filtration guidelines.
- IEC 60417-5935: Graphical symbols for user instructions and equipment labeling as incorporated into marking requirements.
- IEC 60335-1: General safety requirements for household and similar electrical appliances; the amendment references and builds upon this foundational standard.
- ISO 3864-1: Design principles for safety colors and signs, providing guidelines for consistent safety symbol usage.
By aligning with these related standards, IEC 60335-2-2 Amendment 2 integrates vacuum cleaners’ particular safety with broader electrotechnical safety frameworks, enhancing product interoperability and regulatory compliance worldwide.
