FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence
between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in
the latter.
5) IEC provides no marking procedure to indicate its approval and cannot be rendered responsible for any
equipment declared to be in conformity with an IEC Publication.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
Publications.
8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
9) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this IEC Publication may be the subject of
patent rights. IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
International Standard IEC 60255-22-1 has been prepared by IEC technical committee 95:
Measuring relays and protection equipment.
This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 2005. This standard
constitutes a technical revision. The main differences with respect to the previous edition are:
– this document is based on IEC 61000-4-18;
– a capacitor was added for testing shielded communication lines when earthed at one end
only;
– the test procedure for communication ports is clarified;
– the length of the communication cable for testing is fixed at 10 m;
– connection to earth removed in Figure 4 for test generator terminal.

MEASURING RELAYS AND PROTECTION EQUIPMENT –

Part 22-1: Electrical disturbance tests –
1 MHz burst immunity tests
1 Scope and object
This part of IEC 60255 is based on IEC 61000-4-18, referring to that publication where
applicable, and specifies the general requirements for 1 MHz oscillatory wave immunity tests
for measuring relays and protection equipment for power system protection, including the
control, monitoring and process interface equipment used with the relays and protection
equipment.
The objective of the tests is to confirm that the equipment under test will operate correctly
when energised and subjected to repetitive damped oscillatory waves such as those originating
from closing or opening circuit breakers or disconnectors in high voltage substations or power
plants.
The requirements specified in this standard are applicable to measuring relays and protection
equipment in a new condition and all tests specified are type tests only.
The object of this standard is to state:
– definition of terms used;
– test severity levels;
– test equipment;
– test set-up;
– test procedure;
– criteria for acceptance;
– test report.

6 Test set-up
The general test set-up is specified in IEC 61000-4-18.
All auxiliary equipment used to provide the EUT with signals for normal operation, and to verify
the correct operation of the EUT, shall be decoupled, so that the test voltage does not affect
the auxiliary equipment.
The length of leads between the test generator and the coupling/decoupling network shall be
as short as possible. The test leads used between the EUT and the coupling/decoupling
network shall not be longer than 2 m.
The EUT and test leads shall be placed on an insulating support 0,1 m above the ground
reference plane. The minimum distance between the EUT and all other conductive structures

60255-22-1 © IEC:2007 – 11 –
(for example the walls of a shielded room) except the ground reference plane beneath the
EUT, shall be 0,5 m.
The EUT shall be tested in its case with the cover in position.
Where the EUT is exclusively mounted in a cubicle, the tests may be conducted with the EUT
in the cubicle. The cubicle, test leads and interconnecting cables shall be placed on an
insulating support, 0,1 m above the ground reference plane.
All parts of the EUT intended to be earthed, shall be earthed.
The test set-up for common and differential mode tests are shown in Figures 2, 3 and 4. For
communication ports, the length of shielded or unshielded cable between EUT1 and EUT2,
tested according to Figure 5, shall be 10 m.
For cables with only one end of the screen earthed, the unearthed end of the screen shall be
connected to the case of the EUT through a 0,5 μF coupling capacitor.
7 Test procedure
The tests shall be carried out at the reference conditions given in IEC 60255-6.
Time delay settings of the EUT shall be set to their minimum practical values as defined by
their intended application.
The tests shall be carried out with auxiliary energising quantities applied to the appropriate
circuits equal to rated values. The values of the input energising quantities shall be within twice
the assigned error of the transitional state both below and above the operating value.
The test voltage shall be applied as follows:
a) between each independent port and earth (common mode), connected as in Figure 2;
b) between each independent port and all other independent ports coupled to earth where
applicable (common mode), connected as in Figure 3;
c) between terminals of the same port where applicable (differential mode), connected as in
Figure 4;
d) between the cable connections of communication ports and earth (common mode),
connected as in Figure 5. The test shall be applied to individual communication cables, i.e.
one cable tested at a time. The exception to this is where more than one cable is required
to ensure correct operation of a communication circuit of the EUT. In such a case the
minimum number of cables to ensure correct operation of the communication circuit shall
be tested.
Independent ports shall be stated by the manufacturer and included in the test report.
The test voltage shall be applied separately with both polarities, for each combination of ports
for a period of at least 2 s.
Where the operating time of the EUT is longer than 2 s, the test voltage shall be applied for a
period longer than the actual operating time of the EUT.
The minimum time interval between two successive tests shall be 1 s.
