Overview
EN 60455-3-4:2003 is a European standard developed by CLC (European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization) that specifies the requirements for filled polyurethane resinous compounds used for electrical insulation. This standard is part of the IEC 60455 series that covers resin-based reactive compounds utilized in electrical insulation systems. Specifically, Part 3, Sheet 4 focuses on classes PUR-F-4 to PUR-F-8 of filled polyurethane compounds in their cured state. These materials are critical in electrical and electronic industries for their insulating properties and durability.
This standard ensures consistent quality and performance of filled polyurethane reactive compounds, making it essential for manufacturers, testing laboratories, and engineering professionals involved in electrical insulation solutions.
Key Topics
Scope and Application:
Defines the properties and performance criteria for filled polyurethane compounds after curing, used across diverse electrical insulation applications.Material Classes Covered:
PUR-F-4 to PUR-F-8 classes specifying density, mechanical, thermal, and electrical characteristics.Test Methods Referenced:
Utilizes IEC 60455-2 (Methods of Test) for determining physical and electrical properties, and IEC 60707 for flammability evaluations.Critical Properties Specified:
- Density range from 1.20 to 1.70 g/cm³
- Mechanical strength: flexural strength (40 to 100 MPa), tensile strength (10 to 50 MPa), elongation at break (1% to 90%)
- Thermal properties: temperature of deflection under load (>45°C to >100°C), glass transition temperature (under consideration)
- Electrical properties: volume resistivity, dissipation factor, permittivity, electric strength measured under standardized conditions
- Water absorption limits (maximum 60 to 180 mg)
- Impact and tracking resistance
- Flammability tests (under consideration)
Special Requirements:
Additional testing may be prescribed in contracts depending on specific application needs such as suitability for low temperature environments.Normative References:
Incorporates and aligns with supplementary international standards, ensuring harmonization and comprehensive testing coverage.
Applications
Filled polyurethane compounds complying with EN 60455-3-4:2003 are widely employed for electrical insulation in industrial and consumer electrical equipment, offering superior:
- Insulating performance in transformers, capacitors, switchgear, and other high voltage components
- Mechanical durability under thermal and electrical stress, enhancing lifespan and safety
- Thermal resistance for equipment operating at elevated temperatures
- Chemical stability and moisture resistance to ensure consistent electrical isolation in harsh environments
- Flammability resistance important for regulatory compliance and safety in electrical assemblies
This standard facilitates the selection of the right polyurethane insulation compounds for manufacturers and designers ensuring product compliance, reliability, and improved manufacturing quality control.
