Electric motor-operated hand-held tools, transportable tools and lawn and garden machinery - Safety - Part 2-9: Particular requirements for hand-held tappers and threaders
IEC 62841-2-9:2015 applies to hand-held tappers and threaders. The rated voltage is not more than 250 V for single-phase a.c. or d.c. tools, and 480 V for three-phase a.c. tools. The rated input is not more than 3 700 W. The limits for the applicability of this standard for battery tools is given in Annex K. This standard deals with the hazards presented by tools which are encountered by all persons in the normal use and reasonably foreseeable misuse of the tools. Hand-held electric tools, which can be mounted on a support or working stand for use as fixed tools without any alteration of the tool itself, are within the scope of this standard and such combination of a hand-held tool and a support is considered to be a transportable tool and thus covered by the relevant Part 3. The attention of National Committees is drawn to the fact that equipment manufacturers and testing organizations may need a transitional period following publication of a new, amended or revised IEC publication in which to make products in accordance with the new requirements and to equip themselves for conducting new or revised tests. It is the recommendation of the committee that the content of this publication be adopted for implementation nationally not earlier than 36 months from the date of publication.

Overview
EN 62841-2-9:2015/prAB:2024 is a European standard developed by CLC under IEC 62841-2-9:2015, focusing on the safety requirements for electric motor-operated hand-held tappers and threaders. This standard applies to single-phase and three-phase tools with rated voltages up to 250 V (single-phase a.c. or d.c.) and 480 V (three-phase a.c.) and rated input power up to 3,700 W. It includes specific provisions for battery-powered tools as detailed in Annex K.
The purpose of this standard is to minimize risks arising from the normal usage or reasonably foreseeable misuse of these hand-held tools. It also covers tools that can be mounted on supports or stands but are essentially hand-held devices, classifying such combinations as transportable tools under the relevant standards. Manufacturers and testing bodies are advised of a recommended transitional period of 36 months to adopt the new or revised requirements.
Key Topics
Scope and Applicability
Applicable to hand-held tappers and threaders used for internal and external screw threads, including battery-powered versions up to a specific limit.Hazard Control
Addresses mechanical and electrical hazards faced during operation and maintenance, emphasizing safety for all users under normal and foreseeable misuse conditions.Battery Tool Safety (Annex K and L)
Introduces mandatory requirements for integral battery-powered tools to include isolation and disabling devices that:- Prevent injury from mechanical hazards during servicing.
- Avoid unintentional starting through lock-off or disabling mechanisms.
- Provide clear indication of device status and protection against accidental reconnection.
Modifications and Exclusions
Clarifies certain clauses in EN 62841-1:2015 that do not apply to these tools, ensuring tailored safety implementation.Compliance and Testing
Compliance is verified through inspection and manual testing, focusing on functionality and safety device effectiveness.
Applications
EN 62841-2-9:2015/prAB:2024 is essential for manufacturers, testing laboratories, and safety inspectors involved with:
Hand-held Tappers and Threaders
Used widely in mechanical workshops, manufacturing plants, and maintenance activities for precision thread-cutting and tapping operations.Battery-Powered Electric Tools
Battery-operated threaders requiring enhanced safety features suited to cordless operation and servicing.Transportable Tool Assemblies
Hand-held electric tapping tools that are integrated with stands or supports for specific uses without modification, ensuring safety standards are maintained.
Implementing this standard helps reduce workplace injuries, supports compliance with European Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, and enhances user confidence in electric tapping and threading equipment.
